1. Swim in Bath Lake

Bath Lake is a swimming hole situated along Medicine Creek in the heart of Medicine Park. Formed by a dam along the creek, a beautiful waterfall flows around its edges. Perfect for swimming, floating, and relaxing, visitors and locals enjoy its cool waters for swimming during the summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day and its views year-round.

2. Medicine Creek 

Medicine Creek is a picturesque waterway that runs right through the town of Medicine Park and is a key component of the town’s history, beauty, and ecosystems. The creeks’ banks and walkways are lined with cobblestones, adding to the town’s distinctive charm. Bath Lake is situated along Medicine Creek.

3. Fishing 

Medicine Creek & Lake Lawtonka both provide fantastic fishing experiences. Trout fishing is popular along Medicine Creek during the winter months. Lake Lawtonka is known for its small-mouth and large-mouth bass, crappie, walleye, and catfish. Age-appropriate Oklahoma fishing permits are required while fishing.

The best times to fish are early morning or late evening. These times offer cooler temperatures and better chances of catching fish. Remember to follow local fishing regulations.

5. Medicine Park Aquarium & Natural Sciences Center

The Medicine Park Aquarium and Natural Sciences Center offers a glimpse into the area’s natural history. You’ll see native fish species and learn about local ecosystems. The center has interactive exhibits that teach you about the area and its wildlife.

You can touch aquatic creatures in the touch tanks. The outdoor botanical garden lets you explore native plants. Kids love feeding turtles and quail and watching the feeding shows!

6. Sweets & Coffee Shops

Bakeries, coffee shops, and souvenir shops line the streets in Medicine Park. A couple of our favorites include:

Mrs. Chadwick’s Bakery: This shop serves crafted coffee, ice cream, and delicious pastries. My kids pick out ice cream every time, while I always enjoy a latte. They take the time to make it just the way I like it and that’s a huge, kind gesture and sign of a great business in my book!

White Buffalo Trading Post: The White Buffalo Trading Post is a jack of all trades! Find old-fashioned sodas, coffees, teas, slush puppies, snacks, and souvenirs in this unique little cobblestone shop.

7. Dining

Medicine Park offers tasty food options that showcase local flavors. You’ll find cozy spots for a quick bite and scenic restaurants perfect for a relaxing meal. Some locations are closed mid-week so be sure to check out their hours during various times of the year in advance.

• Healthy Hippie Cafe & Bar: The Healthy Hippie Cafe & Bar is a must-visit for health-conscious eaters. They serve fresh, nutritious meals in a laid-back setting near the entrance to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Rent one of their cozy Hippie Huts for private dining which can be heated! They also have a glamping village where visitors can rent primitive camping sites or fully furnished tent sites with fantastic views of the surrounding landscape with easy access to hiking trails. 

• Joe Mountain Breakfast Bar: You can start your day at Joe Mountain Breakfast Bar. It’s a great place to fuel up before exploring the town. They offer hearty breakfast options to satisfy your morning cravings.

• Small Mountain Street Tacos: This is a great stop for a quick and yummy bite to eat by the walkway on Medicine Creek. We love stopping for tacos after a morning’s swim in Bath Lake. 

• Old Plantation Restaurant: For a quick lunch, try The Old Plantation Restaurant. This local favorite serves up comfort food that’ll remind you of home-cooked meals.

• Riverside Cafe: Riverside Cafe offers a unique treehouse dining experience. You’ll enjoy delicious food while surrounded by live trees growing in and around the restaurant. The cafe overlooks Medicine Creek, providing stunning views as you eat.

• Tu Familia Mexican Restaurant: If you’re in the mood for Mexican cuisine, try Tu Familia Mexican Restaurant. They serve tasty dishes and sit atop a cliff with an amazing view of Medicine Park below. It’s a perfect spot for lunch or dinner after a day of outdoor activities.

8. Walking 

Medicine Park is quite walkable. Cobblestone-lined pathways meander along Medicine Creek, providing great opportunities for walks along its trails. We park in a public parking lot near Bath Lake and then walk up and down the pathways as well as the streets easily, to shop and explore the town. 

9. Escape Rooms & Pizzeria

Open Wednesday through Sunday, Escape The Park is a pizzeria and escape room combo. It has 4 escape room opportunities, as well as the ability to book online. Stay and eat some pizza while enjoying great views of the surrounding area afterward!

10. Mount Scott Scenic Views

Drive, hike, or bike up Mount Scott for stunning vistas. The paved road to the top is perfect for both driving and cycling. Hours of entrance vary based on heat and time of year. A nice parking lot is found at the top. We love to spend an hour walking around the boulders and exploring the area. Catching a sunrise or sunset from this vantage point is exceptional. However, drivers, bikers, and hikers have certain hours they are allowed to use the road, so be sure to check that out depending on when you plan to visit. 

11. Hiking 

Medicine Park has six Lawtonka Trails perfect for various levels of hiking. Some areas are rocky and slick and may be overgrown or covered with water depending on the time of year and recent rainfall. You’ll find paths winding through beautiful landscapes.

• For a challenge, try the Elk Mountain Trail. It offers breathtaking views of the Wichita Mountains.

• The Charons Garden Wilderness Area has rocky trails leading to hidden waterfalls. Wear sturdy shoes for this adventure.

• A great scenic, short hike to the Forty Foot Hole is well worth your time.

Remember to bring water and snacks on your hikes. The Oklahoma sun can be strong, so wear sunscreen too.

The historic cobblestone architecture of Medicine Park is a must-see. These unique buildings date back to the early 1900s. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time as you walk past the small round cobblestones adorning shops and homes.

Many of the old buildings now house cute shops and restaurants. You can browse local art, buy handmade crafts, or enjoy a meal in these historic spots. Don’t forget to take photos of the charming cobblestone architecture. 

13. Picnicking

Pack a picnic and enjoy the scenery at one of many peaceful spots along Medicine Creek or in the refuge. Picnic tables can be found along roadways in the refuge and by Bath Lake.

Medicine Park hosts exciting music festivals and art events throughout the year. You can enjoy live performances and browse local artwork.

You’ll love the festivals in Medicine Park. The town puts on several fun events each year. One big one is the Roots Ball in May. It’s a great chance to hear folk and roots music.

Another cool fest is Rock’n the Park in July. You can jam out to rock bands over a fun weekend. In August, there’s the Blues Ball. This event brings in top blues artists. 

The Medicine Park Flute Festival, Art Walk, and Powwow occur in October each year. You’ll find paintings, sculptures, and more.

Medicine Park has a thriving art scene too. As you stroll through town, pop into the small shops. Many local artists display their creations here. You might find the perfect piece to take home.

19. Visit Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is a must-visit spot on the outskirts of Medicine Park. It was established to protect and preserve native wildlife and their habitats.

The refuge is home to a diverse ecosystem, including plants, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians.  Its free-roaming herd of bison, elk, deer, and longhorn cattle are fun to spot while hiking and driving throughout the refuge. 

Visitors to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge can enjoy a wide range of recreational activities, including hiking, birding, and hunting. 

The diverse landscape includes mixed-grass prairie and ancient granite mountains.

20. Holy City

The Holy City is located within the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and offers visitors a blend of natural beauty and religious symbolism. It was created as a recreation of ancient Jerusalem and is used as a backdrop for the area’s annual Easter pageant. It was built between 1934 and 1936. Easter 2025 will officially be its 100th Easter pageant!

21. Parallel Forest

The Parallel Forest is a unique and intriguing location within the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. You’ll walk through rows of cedar trees planted exactly 6 feet apart in all directions. The forest is known for its eerie, maze-like appearance. It’s perfectly straight rows of trees create parallel lines that stretch as far as the eye can see. Some believe that the forest is haunted. 

It was planned with intent by the federal government as part of an effort to counteract the effects of the Dust Bowl in the 1930s. The trees were meant to act as a wind block to prevent soil erosion. 

It’s one of the last standing remains of when the area was a national forest. 

22. Lake Lawtonka

Lake Lawtonka is situated on the northern border of Medicine Park. It spans about 2400 acres and is home to many species of fish and wildlife. Boating and other water sports are popular on the lake, as well as a swimming beach that can be used during daytime hours. A marina and gas station are available as well.

Take a kayak to explore the shoreline. It’s a great way to see the area from a new angle. Fishing enthusiasts will love the variety of fish. Bass, catfish, and crappie are common catches.

Don’t forget to pack a cooler with snacks and drinks. You’ll want to spend the whole day here!

23. Burger in Meers

Meers Store and Restaurant is located nearby in Meers, OK. Both iconic and tasty, it’s a quite popular spot for burgers. We stopped by after a day of hiking before heading home. Wait times may be long, but the burgers are worth it! 

It’s a rustic hidden gem of the area. It’s not open every day, so be sure to check out hours before planning a trip. Their Facebook page stays active and often has more up-to-date hours and information than Google. 

24. Museum of the Great Plains

Located in nearby Lawton, the Museum of the Great Plains preserves and showcases the cultural and natural history of the Great Plains region. It features a variety of exhibits, starting from the arrival of the Paleo-Indians known as the Clovis. It uses interactive exhibits and self-directed activities for visitors to use and explore. It’s a valuable educational resource for all visitors. 

25. Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum

The Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum was created in 1935. Its goal is to preserve the history of the Field Artillery and Fort Sill and provide educational opportunities related to its history. It’s one of the largest collections of frontier-era buildings and structures in the United States.

Bath Lake in Medicine Park is a popular recreational spot in southwestern Oklahoma. One of our favorite summertime pastimes involves rounding up friends, packing a bag for the day, and heading to Bath Lake for some water-filled relaxation. We typically visit a few times a year. There’s just no better way to spend a hot July day, than taking a dip in its mild waters. 

Built in the early 1900s, Bath Lake is a swimming hole fed by Medicine Creek that offers a refreshing spot for visitors to swim, relax, fish, and enjoy the natural surroundings. Medicine Park itself is a small historic cobblestone community, known for its charming atmosphere and proximity to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

Bath Lake in Medicine Park Overview

Situated along Medicine Creek and surrounded by walking trails, lush greenery, boulders, and a waterfall over the dam, “picturesque” barely begins to define the scene when walking up to Bath Lake.

Although much is man-made and designed, the swimming hole resides in a setting that has retained as much natural aesthetic as possible in this small town. Cobblestone-lined walkways guide you to its entrances, which are spread out and great for most ages.

The dam creates a beautiful waterfall over the edge of the lake as the creek continues to run. It provides a centralized, calm area for swimmers, but also allows the flow of water to keep it from becoming stagnant. Fishing is allowed on the other side of the waterfall during the summer months. Signs posted state clearly where fishing and swimming are allowed. The area is open for trout fishing during the winter months. 

How To Get To Bath Lake in Medicine Park

If traveling from Oklahoma City, Tulsa, or the Dallas area, travel down I-44 until you reach Highway 49 at Exit 45. Head west on Highway 49 until you come to W Lake Dr in Medicine Park. Drive northwest on W Lake Drive until you come to Auto Bridge Rd ( a single car at a time can drive over the bridge ). Turn left onto East Lake Drive to find parking and Bath Lake.

Pro-Tip: There are two main public parking areas along East Lake Drive near Bath Lake. We prefer to park in the one across from the Medicine Park Fire Department in town. It’s closest to Bath Lake and gives us easy access to our gear before and after swimming. Check out our map above for more points of interest!

Bath Lake Medicine Park Swimming

The swimming area is considered the area between the dam and the Curtis Davis Bridge. The southeastern edge is divided by an outline of rocks that create a great shallow area for small children to swim and for adults to relax. Bridges guide you from the walkways on either side of Bath Lake to entrances into its water. Handrails are provided in a couple of spots. Tread carefully, as it is slick in some areas. 

Swim moderators are located on a small shaded deck on the east side of the lake during open hours. Once you pay them your fee (cash only), they’ll give you wristbands that are valid for the entire day’s swim. 

Swimming is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 10am to 8pm. We like to arrive as close to opening as possible, typically on a weekday. This helps to avoid crowds and have the majority of the swimming hole to ourselves for the most part. 

Even in our family full of good swimmers, we like to have noodles and tubes to float on. The edges of the swimming hole have rocks and ledges to stand on, but once you’re out from the edge you’re on your own if you get tired or want to relax, and it’s not clear water. I love to sit on noodles as I relax and watch the kids play. 

Water shoes are also a must for us. Sharp surprises are not fun and the ledges are quite slippery. One of our kids’ favorite water games to play while here is “Marco Polo.” Our kids love it and sometimes others will join in, and they all make fast friends!

Picnic areas & tables are available alongside the edge of Bath Lake.

Pro-Tip: There is NOT a changing area at Bath Lake, but there are public restrooms next to the fire station just down the street. They are not always the best, but they work. If using them, please pick up after yourself and help keep it clean! Porta potties are also available along the street as well. 

Bath Lake Medicine Park Fishing

With a valid Oklahoma fishing license, fishing is allowed in the section of the creek just east of the waterfall.  The Medicine Creek area is stocked with trout during the colder winter months.

While visiting Bath Lake, we like to spend the rest of the day exploring Medicine Park and the surrounding area. There are a variety of restaurants, shopping, and sightseeing available around town.

If you like to hike and the temperature is cool enough, head to the nearby Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge for more adventure. Most hiking during the hot, summer months is closed after 10am if temps are too high. We love to hike to the Forty Foot Hole when it’s not too hot.

The Travertine Nature Center resides partially over Travertine Creek, a picturesque waterway known for its clear, cool waters and beautiful travertine formations. 

Chickasaw National Recreation Area travelers usually drive from I-35 and exit onto Highway 7. Drive east along Highway 7 until reaching Highway 177 in Sulphur, OK. Drive south on Highway 177 to enter the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Turn east (left) on Perimeter Road. The road winds along Travertine Creek until reaching the Travertine Nature Center.

1. Exhibits: 

The center features interactive displays that educate visitors about the local wildlife, plant species, geology, and hydrology of the area. These exhibits include dioramas, panels, and hands-on activities that are engaging and informational. A kids’ corner provides snake skins, turtle shells, insects, and feathers for children to explore. A large travertine rock is on display as well!

2. Live Animals:

Visitors can observe live reptiles, amphibians, and fish, providing an up-close look at various species that can be found in the area. We recently saw live snakes, turtles, fish, & frogs on display. Large picture windows provide views of the outside world. Relax, sit, & watch awhile as birds native to the area visit feeders stationed just outside!

3. Junior Ranger Program:

Request a Junior Ranger Activity Booklet and your children may complete the activities for their age group. Once finished, return it to the park ranger at the center. Children can then be sworn in as Junior Rangers and receive badges!

4. Ranger-Led Programs: 

Staff at the nature center provide a range of educational programs, including guided hikes, nature talks, and wildlife viewing sessions. These programs are designed to enhance visitors’ understanding and appreciation of the natural environment. A 100-seat auditorium is available for video presentations. We once enjoyed a thorough presentation about the area’s beaver population.

5. Gift Shop & Bookstore Section:

Although small, this area of the building offers a colorful array of books, stuffed animals, games, puzzles, trinkets, and puppets, for example. Regardless of age, you’re bound to find something of interest! It’s a favorite stop of ours.

6. Trailheads: 

The nature center is the starting point for trails that wind through the beautiful landscape of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. The Antelope Springs Trail and Travertine Creek Trail both offer opportunities for hiking, bird-watching, and enjoying the scenic beauty of the park.

7. Small Aquariums: 

A highlight of the Travertine Nature Center is its small aquariums, which showcase fish and other aquatic life native to the local streams and lakes. This allows visitors to get an up-close look at the underwater ecosystem of the area. Various amphibians and reptiles can be seen too, as well as examples of wildlife in the area.

8. Ranger Assistance: 

Rangers and volunteers at the center’s information desk are available to provide information, answer questions, and assist with trip planning. They offer valuable insights into the best spots to visit within the recreation area and can help visitors make the most of their experience.

History Of The Travertine Nature Center

The center was built in 1969 during the National Park Service’s conservation education efforts. It was one of the last major additions to Platt National Park, but was the first nature center built by the National Park Service west of the Mississippi. Its unique structure was inspired by Architect Frank Lloyd Wright and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

Lake Stanley Draper is our OKC lake escape. We visit often to walk our pups and ride our bikes. Located in central Oklahoma, in the southeast corner of Oklahoma City, the lake area offers visitors recreational activities such as boating, fishing, hiking, and mountain biking, to name a few. 

The reservoir has 34 miles of shoreline surrounding roughly 3000 acres of water.  Originally built in 1962-1963, Lake Stanley Draper is the only lake in Oklahoma City that allows water skiing. Recent upgrades over the past decade have made the lake a destination for cyclists and hikers, among others, who utilize its paved trails and amenities.

How To Get To Lake Stanley Draper

Lake Stanley Draper is located in Southeast Oklahoma City, just east of Moore, OK. It’s situated south of I-240 and just north of 149th Street, between Westminster and Midwest Boulevard. Stanley Draper Drive surrounds the lake and its peninsulas, giving visitors easy access to amenities around the lake.

Best Things To Do At Lake Stanley Draper

Located near the Oklahoma City metro, Lake Stanley Draper gives nearby residents and visitors a quiet wooded escape with both relaxing and adventurous activities available.

City permits for activities such as boating, off-road riding, fishing, hunting, flying model aircraft, etc. can be purchased online here and onsite at the marina. State permits are required as well for fishing and boating.

1. Boating & Kayaking

Boat ramps are available at the marina, Points 22 & 23, and Park Recreation Area 1. All watercraft must have permits to be launched onto the lake. 

Visitors can use boats, kayaks, jet skis, etc. to relax, fish, and water ski in designated areas. Glass containers are not allowed on the lake.

2. Fishing

Six fishing piers & docks are available around the lake at various points. Most people fish for bass, crappie, catfish, walleye, & perch.

Fishing piers are available at Points 4, 6, 9, 19, 22, & 23, the marina, and Park Recreation Area 1.

3. Water Skiing

Waterskiing and jet skis are allowed on Lake Stanley Draper. Be sure to follow safety protocol when out on the water and operating watercraft. 

Note: Swimming is not allowed at Lake Stanley Draper. 

4. Biking & Walking Trails

Lake Stanley Draper Trail / 13.5 miles / Loop Trail / Moderate  

This paved trail loops around Lake Stanley Draper & is great for bikers, runners, & walkers. We take our pups out often along sections of this trail. Some areas of the trail have better views of the lake than others. Be prepared for some hills with hefty inclines and declines.

There are several spots around the lake with parking spaces available. Looking for restrooms? There are porta potties at Mile 1 & Mile 7 and regular restrooms at the marina and near the playground by the marina.

Note: Bikers & walkers must beware of cars crossing the Lake Stanley Draper Trail as it surrounds the lake. Drivers, beware of those using this trail as you drive across its path!

Tinker-Draper Trail / 8.5 miles / Moderate

This trail runs from the Oklahoma River at the I40 & I35 junction and continues to the north side of Lake Stanley Draper.

5. Mountain Biking & Hiking Trails

These trails reside in the Lake Stanley Draper Mountain Bike Park, northeast of the lake. Hikers & mountain bikers share these unpaved, wooded trails. The terrain is sometimes uneven. Bug spray is recommended during warm months. We check for ticks after hiking during the summer months. Pets must be on a leash at all times. Trails are open year-round. Signs can be a little difficult to follow, so use an app such as the AllTrails app to stay on track.

Note: Various short wooded trails can also be found at the end of paved drives (or “points”) around the lake that extend to the beach area across its many peninsulas. 

6. ATV & Dirt Bike Area

CrossTimbers ORV is a 1500+ off-road riding acreage devoted to ATVs and dirt bikes only. The park has multiple trails along with an endurocross area and motocross track. 7. Camping

CrossTimbers Campground is located near the CrossTimbers ORV riding area trailhead and has 32 campsites available at $8 per day for up to 2 weeks. The sites have no electric or water hookups, but do have charcoal grills and concrete picnic tables. Porta potties are available on one end of the campground. Permits can be purchased at the marina only. 

Camping here is pretty primitive with few amenities, but if you are looking for something rustic with not many neighbors, it might be pretty perfect!

8. Picnicking

You can set up a picnic at several scenic spots with concrete picnic tables throughout the entire lake area, but there are a few popular areas that are perfect for picnicking.

9. Digging for Rose Rocks

One insanely cool thing about Lake Stanley Draper is the ability to collect our state rock, the rose rock. The lake often gets a bad rap for its red-stained, muddy water. However, its unique red clay is the cause of our famed rose rocks and provides a one-of-a-kind experience in exploration. 

Often, no digging is necessary. Look carefully. They can be found along the shoreline!

These “petaled” rocks can often be found at Points 10, 11, & 12 as well as on the southeast side of the lake by the dam. Park and walk along the trail to the lake. 

The barite rose was formed when the barite crystals came about from groundwater through porous spaces between grains of sand in Garber Sandstone. Our red dirt was created when sand and mud eroded from the eastern end of Oklahoma and was transferred by river flow westward to a sea about 299 to 251 million years ago. The red comes from the red iron oxide compounds found in the mud and sand. 

Unfortunately, there is trash and litter scattered in the area.

Baxter Field RC Flying Club has a paved runway and field available for flying model airplanes. Permits must be purchased to participate. 

11. Lake Stanley Draper Playgrounds

The shaded playground area is located next to the marina and is a great spot for picnics and for children to play.

Point 10, Area 2 also has a playground area with a covered pavilion.

12. Lake Stanley Draper Marina

Lake Stanley Draper’s marina has restrooms, water, fishing & boating gear, and friendly, helpful staff. Permits can be purchased inside. Concessions such as chips, drinks, ice, and pizza are available as well. Fishing piers, boat docks, and ramps are nearby. 

13. Volleyball Courts

Two volleyball courts surrounded by sand are located at Point #1 area. 

14. City Art Scavenger Hunt

See if you can spot all four art pieces funded by an art program through the City of Oklahoma City!

• Booya Car – partially buried artistic & classic car located on SE 119th Street on the east side of the trail

• Bee 52 – Represents both a bee and a bomber & is located on the west side of the lake

15. Wildlife Viewing

You’re likely to come across various wildlife, especially if you’re patient and quiet. Expect to see various birds such as hawks, egrets, songbirds, and occasionally roadrunners. Turtles can be seen in the lake. We often see deer, squirrels, lizards, and rabbits along the trails depending on the time of day and season.

Encompassed by the evergreens and sedimentary rock formations of the Kiamichi Mountains, it’s situated just outside of Beavers Bend State Park and north of Broken Bow, OK along U.S. Highway 259. 

Locals have worked to create a thriving community while maintaining the area’s natural and charismatic charm. Besides being a hot spot for both outdoor adventurers and those searching for peaceful relaxation, Hochatown is a town of sheer resilience with a rich, meaningful history. 

The town officially became an incorporated community in November of 2022, after years of advocacy by local supporters & residents. With about 30,000 visitors on weekends, Hochatown has something to offer for every traveler.

Anytime I scout out a new location, I’m on the lookout for the best spots to photograph and the best views of the area. Our top viewpoints are:

• Beavers Bend Brewery – Climb their stairs to the topmost deck for a wonderful view of Hochatown. Sunsets are a favorite!

• Cedar Bluff Trail Lookout – a little further south into Beavers Bend Park, this lookout can be found along Cedar Bluff Trail. Cameras just can’t do it justice! 

• Rugaru Adventures Ziplining Tour – It’s hard to beat taking in breathtaking views during the adrenaline rush of a zipline excursion!

3. Wildlife Viewing

Wildlife native to the area can be found on your back porch or along the trails in Beavers Bend State Park. Bald eagles, deer, turkey, ducks, coyotes, woodpeckers, or even an occasional black bear might be seen. However, we haven’t spotted a black bear yet.

4. Hochatown Rescue Center & Petting Zoo

Hochatown Rescue Center and Petting Zoo are perfect for animal lovers of all ages, featuring a diverse array of animals such as farm animals, birds, reptiles, and even some exotic species. As a licensed wildlife rehabilitation center, the facility emphasizes animal welfare education and welcomes donations to support their cause. 

5. Explore a Gigantic Wooden Maze & Play Mini-Golf

The Maze of Hochatown is a pretty unique experience in itself. Large wooden panels create a human-sized large labyrinth to literally get lost in and navigate your way out. The layout is changed occasionally, so make it a stop every time you’re in town. Additionally, they now have an 18-hole mini-golf course available, Chili Dippers Golf Club, as well!

6. Explore the History of the Area

Check out the Forest Heritage Center & Nature Center at Beavers Bend State Park to learn more about the area’s history and its people. 

Looking for more about the Choctaw Nation and don’t mind a drive? Check out the Choctaw Nation Museum in Tuskahoma, OK. It’s a little over an hour away from Hochatown, OK, but provides visitors with information and displays about Choctaw history. Entry is free!

7. Ziplining Adventure

Check out Rugaru Adventures Ziplining Tour to book a ziplining adventure in Hochatown. Ziplining in general is thrilling, but coupled with soaring through the forested terrain seals the deal!

8. Pan for Treasure

Beavers Bend Mining Company is fantastic for families and children, with a variety of activities. Kiddos can pan for stones, fossils, and gems, enjoy the playground, ride a dinosaur ride, dig in the dino area, create wax hands, or explore the gift shop.

Gutter Chaos offers family fun with restaurant service too. The establishment offers a limited number of bowling lanes, as well as pool tables, an arcade, and an outdoor patio with games. While it is an ideal destination for family outings, it also features a bar and hosts evening karaoke sessions, for an adult-only crowd.

Hochatown Amusements is another family fun center that’s located a little further south on 259. It offers go-kart races and putt-putt, as well as scrumptious fair-food-style snacks.

Yes! Hochatown is officially a town as of November 2022. Volunteer residents have spent countless hours on behind-the-scenes efforts, both before and after incorporation, to meet the community’s needs. Now, they’re building the town’s infrastructure from the ground up.

Hochatown’s mayor, Dian Jordan, shared a little about their ongoing endeavors.

 Chickasaw National Recreation Area Overview 

Located in southern Oklahoma on the edge of the small town of Sulphur, the Chickasaw National Recreation Area is steeped in a rich past that spans the cultural significance of Native American tribes and the evolution of American conservation efforts.

The park has taken many forms over the years, but the agenda has remained the same: preservation of its mineral waters and natural features.

Chickasaw National Recreation Area Information 

Now considered a national reserve, Chickasaw National Recreation Area honors the Chickasaw Nation by name, but is run by the National Park Service. It includes the former Platt National Park (the area now known as the Platt Historic District) and the Arbuckle Recreation Area, where Oklahoma’s prairies of the west intermingle with its deciduous forests of the east.

Fast Facts

• Entry is FREE! No entrance permits or passes are necessary. Fees are charged for boats on the Lake of the Arbuckles and for camping.

• Pets are allowed in most areas but must be leashed no longer than 6 feet or attached in a controlled, safe way.
  • Pets CAN swim in water areas except for the named waterfalls but must be leashed.
  • Pets CAN be in campground areas unless barking is excessive or a nuisance.
  • Pets ARE allowed on trails west of the Travertine Nature Center.
  • Pets are NOT allowed in the Travertine Nature Center, buildings, or the trails east of the Travertine Nature Center.

• The outdoor areas of the park are open 24 hours a day all year long. The Travertine Nature Center is open most days from 9am to 4:30pm or 5pm, depending on the season, excluding holidays.

• Public Wifi is NOT available.

• Public restrooms are available in the Travertine Nature Center, as well as periodically along the trails and near the campgrounds.

• Peak visitor times are on the weekends during the months of May to September. Once parking spaces fill up in the Travertine Creek area, no more cars may enter. December & January are generally the least crowded.

Pro-Tip: Roads that lead into and out of the area east of Highway 177 become one-way on Perimeter Road. If you miss your stop, just take the loop around again. It won’t take long. Beware of pedestrians and animals in the park as you’re driving through and sight-seeing. 

Things To Do At Chickasaw National Recreation Area

There are so many amazing things to do in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, whether you prefer exploring its culture and history or enjoying outdoor fun.

1. Travertine Nature Center

The Travertine Nature Center serves as an educational and informational hub for visitors within the park. One of our lifelong family friends worked as a park ranger here before moving a couple of years ago. One excursion while visiting led us to meeting a sweet little owl at the center and the opportunity to watch her feed some of its current animals. 

The nature center has bird feeders outside of its large window drawing in countless native birds for viewers to watch. Kids can enjoy signing up for their junior ranger program and experience the center’s interactive learning area, as well as a small gift shop.

Junior Ranger Program: Ask for a Junior Ranger Activity Booklet. Complete the activities for the appropriate age group and then return to the park ranger at the center.  Your child can then be sworn in as a Junior Ranger and receive a badge!

Ranger-Led Programs: Visitors can enjoy ranger-led nature walks on Saturdays & Sundays in the afternoons. Expect the walks to last about 45 minutes.

Pro-Tip: You will cross a bridge to visit the Travertine Nature Center & many popular spots that are covered in water. The Travertine Creek continuously flows over the bridge that you’ll cross in your vehicle. Be prepared when selecting your mode of transportation to visit! Motorcyclists are encouraged to use the southeast Perimeter Road to enter to avoid this water crossing.

2. Trails

The Park’s trails are perfect for a variety of activities. Visitors can hike, walk, and bicycle. The Rock Creek Multi-use trail system even allows for horseback riding. 

• Antelope Springs Trail: 1.0-mile round trip ( Antelope + Buffalo = 1.4 miles)

The Antelope Springs Trail is the main trail east of the Travertine Nature Center, with loops branching out from it. You can see both the Antelope Springs and the Buffalo Springs from this trail. Pets are not allowed. The main trail works well for most strollers but the side trails mentioned below are more rustic and less stroller or wheelchair-friendly. Our kids love exploring all along the trails, with ample opportunity to deviate from the trail into the natural environment.

• Prairie Loop: add 0.5 mile / expect stepping stones / may get wet
• Tall Oaks Loop: add 0.6 mile / expect stepping stones / may get wet
• Buffalo Springs Loop: add 0.4 mile
• Dry Creek Loop: add 0.5 miles & extend from the Buffalo Springs Loop

• Travertine Creek Trail: 1.5 miles one-way

The Travertine Creek Trail runs between the Pavilion Springs and the Travertine Nature Center, with parking available on either end of it. Expect bridge crossings at times and stairs near the Pavilion Springs, but most of the trail is level and easy. Pets are allowed on leashes. 

• Veterans Trail: 0.5-mile one-way

The Veterans Trail runs between the Pavilion Springs and the Oklahoma Veterans Center. Most of the trail is pretty wide and level but made of gravel. Pets are allowed on leashes. Strollers and scooters will do better than wheelchairs.

• West Bison Pasture Loop: 1.9 miles round trip

The West Bison Pasture Loop is a gravel trail that runs around the West Bison Pasture with multiple possible entrances onto the loop. There are some steep areas, stairs, and varied terrain along the length of the loop, making it too difficult for wheelchairs and most strollers. Pets are allowed while properly leashed.

• Spur Trail to Bromide Hill Viewpoint: add 0.5 mile / one way / narrow & steep
• Spur Trail to Rock Creek Campground: add 0.8 mile / one way / narrow & steep

• Flower Park Trails: about 0.5-mile round trip

These gravel trails weave through the park area between the Vendome Well and the Lincoln Bridge. Spring water outlined with stones streams through the area, surrounded by lush green grass and sporadic trees overhead.

• Inkana Trail: 0.3-mile one way

Paved and wide, this trail connects Veterans Lake to the Chickasaw Cultural Center. Hiking this trail in the spring is my favorite. You’ll catch sight of a vast array of native wildflowers along the trail up until you reach the great 195-foot Inkana Bridge that crosses over Rock Creek. Cross the bridge and enter the backside of the Chickasaw Cultural Center, another wonderful experience, full of history and education about the Chickasaw Nation. The bridge symbolizes their connection to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area.

• Veterans Lake Trail: 2.8 miles loop

Built of concrete, this wide trail surrounds Veterans Lake. There are some steep inclines as well as more level sections.

• Lakeside Trails at The Point:
  • Lakeview Trail: 1-mile round trip
  • Fishing Rock Trail: 1.6 miles round trip

Both dirt trails start from Cooper Memorial Road, north of the picnic area. 

• Rock Creek Multi-Use Trails: 
  • Trail 1: 4.3 miles one-way
  • Trail 4: 5.2 miles one-way
  • Loop Trails:
    • Trail 1 to 2 to 3: 2.2-mile loop
    • Trail 1 to 3: 5.2-mile loop
    • Trail 4 to 1 to Dirt Road: 3.3-mile loop

These trails can be used for horseback riding and are more rustic and difficult to follow at times. They also pass through areas that may be hunted at times. 

• Bromide Hill Trail: 2.4-mile out-and-back route 

The Bromide Hill Trail runs along the base of the lookout point. It is generally considered moderately challenging due to its elevation gain and rugged terrain. 

3. Swimming

There are a variety of open, free swimming areas within the park. Swimmers can enjoy both Veterans Lake and the Lake of the Arbuckles for swimming, except at boat launches and fishing docks. 

Popular areas include The Point at the Lake of the Arbuckles, the 40 Foot Hole along Cat’s Eye Road, and the Black Sulphur Springs area along Rock Creek.

The Little Niagara & Travertine Island area is one of the most popular (and crowded) swimming spots during any warm day. The area covers about 22 acres of land, with woods, travertine formations, stones, and both natural and man-made waterfalls with Travertine Creek and Limestone Creek running through it.

Our favorite area to swim? Just west of Little Niagara, follow the creek along less crowded stretches. We enjoy wading downstream, exploring the natural area in the creek’s cold, but clear waters. The falls’ areas are more popular, but the stretches in between provide wonderful swimming experiences that are typically less crowded.

Areas east of Little Niagara are off-limits for swimming. 

Check out the area’s bacteria levels here before entering. 

Pro-Tip: Water shoes are highly recommended. Natural creek bottoms have rocks and occasionally sharp surprises to the feet.

4. Waterfalls

The Chickasaw National Recreation Area is home to several small falls. A few of our favorites:

Little Niagara Falls: Google Maps Location

Easily the best well-known in the area, Little Niagara Falls is both scenic and popular, for its deep swimming hole, picnicking area, and beauty. Its temperature typically ranges between 62 and 64 degrees Fahrenheit.

5. Fishing

Fishing is allowed in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area with a valid fishing license (if required by age) EXCEPT in the areas east of Highway 177 including Travertine Creek and the Travertine Nature Center. Fishing docks are available at both the Lake of the Arbuckles and Veterans Lake. Expect to fish for bass, crappie, perch, and catfish. Traps are not allowed.

6. Hunting

Hunting in the area is allowed in certain zones and areas and at certain times of the year with a valid license. Seasons are established by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. Learn more here. 

7. Wildlife Viewing

The Chickasaw National Recreation Area is in an area known as an ecotone, a merge of the eastern hardwood forests and the prairies of the west in south-central Oklahoma. As an ecotone, it’s home to a diverse ecosystem. 

Wildlife enthusiasts have the opportunity to spot a variety of animals, such as the White-tailed Deer, bison, raccoons, armadillo, turkey, rabbits, the Eastern Meadowlark, and Black-capped chickadees, to name a few. 

With patience, you might spot animals seen less often. One spring evening, we had the privilege of a visit from a Southern flying squirrel that glided onto the railing of our front porch. 

8. Picnicking

There are several wonderful picnic areas with concrete tables and benches throughout the park area. Some include charcoal stations. Look along Perimeter Road, near waterfalls, and throughout the campgrounds. There are several next to Little Niagara as well. No reservations are required. Just pick a pretty spot and enjoy!

9. Bromide Hill

Bromide Hill provides a scenic overlook of the town of Sulphur, OK. You can park just below the lookout and hike up a moderately steep incline to see its epic cliff views!

If you’re looking for a longer adventure, take the Bromide Hill Trail before or after viewing.

10. Vendome Well & Flower Park

Vendome Well is an artesian well known for its spring-fed water flow. Flower Park is a lush landscaped wooded park that surrounds it.

• Vendome Well: The well was created in 1922 to provide a reliable water source in the area. Its popularity grew because of its ability to produce so much water, which was reported to be around 2,500 gallons per minute. The mineral waters that feed the well have drawn visitors for years for their supposed health benefits. Beware that sometimes it smells strongly of sulfur!

• Flower Park: The Flower Park was created in the early 1900s by the Civilian Conservation Corp. Its rustic, natural quality was popular at that time. The goal was to leave as much of the area preserved as they could. The small stream of spring-fed water that runs between the two areas is lined with stones.

11. Lincoln Bridge

Lincoln Bridge was dedicated on Abraham Lincoln’s birthday in 1909. It’s located south of Flower Park near Perimeter Road and just west of Highway 177. It was the original park’s oldest structure. Its intricate stonework and detail stand out amidst the lush natural landscape surrounding it.

12. The Bison Pasture

A small herd of American Bison now call the designated area of the park home. The sulfur springs once drew in large herds that roamed the area. This particular herd is descended from a group of six bison that were brought in from the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge in 1920. 

Pro-Tip: Stop by the Bison Viewpoint along Highway 177 in the late afternoon. With some luck, you might spot the herd from here.

13. The Leeper House

The Leeper House dates back to 1894 when it was a family home for Graves Leeper. It was later used as a place for settling Indian land claims, a school, and a community center. It later became the superintendent’s office in 1904 for the future Platt National Park. It’s the only known building that is still standing from the first settlement of the original Sulphur Springs. It has been utilized for headquarters and the park area for over a century. 

14. Lake of the Arbuckles

Visitors can use ski boats, motor boats, jet skis, kayaks, & canoes on the Lake of the Arbuckles. Permits are required for motorized boats. There are 4 boat ramps available on the lake and a fishing dock. 

We usually take a boat out on the lake a few times a year to swim, ski, and tube. It’s a popular destination, especially on the weekends. The key is to get out on the water early to beat the crowds!

15. Veterans Lake

Built in 1933, Veterans Lake was added to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area in 1983. The lake can have canoes and kayaks, but no wake boats. Permits are not required for this lake. The 3-mile paved path surrounding the lake is ideal for walking. Enjoy a picnic under its covered pavilion. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, take the Inkana Trail from the lake to the Chickasaw Cultural Center to spend some time learning about the history & culture of the Chickasaw Nation.

How To Get There

Most travel by car, SUV, truck, or motorcycle to Sulphur, OK. The nearest commercial airport is Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City, about 85 miles away via I-35. Once there, driving and biking are your best options. 

Driving: Driving is typically the cheapest & quickest.

Train: You can take the Amtrak to Pauls Valley and then rent a car or take a taxi or similar service to Sulphur.

Bus: Take a Greyhound bus to Ardmore & then rent a car or take a taxi or similar service to Sulphur. 

Flight: Fly into Will Rogers Airport in Oklahoma City or Dallas Fort Worth International Airport & then rent a car or take a taxi or similar service to Sulphur. Once in Sulphur, however, you will need transportation to get around.

Traveling Within The Park

There are multiple entrances to the park to choose from, depending on your destination and where you’re coming from. Many are not easily searched, so I’m listing their Google Maps coordinates here:

Google Maps Location: Platt Historic District North Entrance

• This option is great if you’re coming from the north part of Sulphur and are visiting the Travertine Creek area or any part of the Platt Historic District and its trails and things to do in the area.

• This entrance brings you into the park from the south, along Highway 177, opposite from the north entrance. You’ll drive by the Bison Pasture, Veterans Lake area, and the Bromide Pavilion before entering the Travertine Creek area.

• You can enter west of Highway 177 by Rock Creek Campground, on the north side of the park as well. You can then follow Perimeter Road into the Platt Historic District in the Travertine Creek area or continue to Veterans Lake.

Bigfoot E-Bikes: Rent an E-Bike for up to 6 hours to explore the park! Located just outside of the Chickasaw National Recreation area near the 12th Street entrance, these unique bikes are powered by solar energy & are a great alternative to your typical transportation in and around the area.

JAMM Transit: This bus service is available within the town of Sulphur during daytime hours Monday through Friday, for $1 per ride. However, they do not transport within the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Call 844-462-2457, then option #3, to set up a pick-up time and location to get you around outside of the park! 

Where To Stay

Fortunately for you, there is a wonderful variety of places to stay in Sulphur. While we typically stay in our family’s cabin in Sulphur, there have been several occasions where we have stayed at other locations in the area for special events & celebrations.

Chickasaw National Park Camping

There are 6 campgrounds spread out through the Platt Historic District & the Lake of the Arbuckles with about 400 sites for tent & RV camping. All campgrounds are open from sometime in May to sometime in October, depending on the year. Some are closed during the winter season. 

Campsites do have fees, depending on the size of the site and whether or not it is a utility site. Some sites are first-come, first-serve, while others are reservation-only. Payments must be made by card, not cash. Fires must only be used in the fire grates provided at each site. 

Our favorite site was in The Point Campground, reserved in advance. It was on the edge of the lake, which had less wind cover, but it was secluded and on a beachy shore of the lake. Our kids enjoyed exploring the site’s backyard endlessly.

Reservations for campsites can be made here or by calling 1-877-444-6777. Checkouts must be completed by noon on the day of departure.

The Artesian Hotel

The Artesian Hotel sits just across the street from the north entrance to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Visitors enjoy luxurious stays with access to the hotel’s restaurant, spa, indoor & outdoor pool, & casino. 

Con: My only complaint is that the smoke smell is strong near the casino entrance and extremely strong in the casino itself. 

Chickasaw Retreat & Conference Center  

This stunning, secluded location sits atop a steep hill, positioning itself perfectly for astounding views of the surrounding Arbuckle Mountains, on the south side of the Lake of the Arbuckles. Its gym & heated pool are top-notch, and there is a hiking trail in the area. 

Con: They do have access to catered meals for groups and a pizza kitchen for guests Thursday through Saturday, but there isn’t a restaurant on-site daily, and it’s a 20-minute drive to find local food & reach the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. 

Echo Canyon Spa & Resort  

Just 5 minutes south of Sulphur & past the Platt Historic District, this secluded, adult-only gated resort is perfect for a romantic getaway or girls’ weekend. Although a little pricey, its services & amenities are such a treat. We stayed in one of their private cottages on the night of our wedding. They have 5-star dining options, a spa, outdoor pool, & an on-site bar.

Con: A little pricier & not family-friendly (if that’s what you’re looking for)

The Chickasaw Nation sold the land, including several springs, to the federal government in 1902 to help ensure its preservation and protect it from commercialization.  

It was first established as the Sulphur Springs Reservation before the creation of the National Park Service. The reservation was renamed Platt National Park in 1906, in honor of the senator who authored the bill for its creation as a national park. More land was bought, and Indigenous residents were relocated to accommodate the growing tourism in the area. 

The Civilian Conservation Corp brought much change to the area in the 1930’s, building some of the falls within the creek area and constructing much of the modern-day park’s impressive rustic layout and structures. 

As the world of medicine expanded over time, the area became less frequented for healing powers and was enjoyed more by those looking for recreational use of its water. As the smallest national park in the country with few grand features, it began to lose its appeal at the federal level. 

In 1976, Platt National Park merged with the Arbuckle Recreation Area and additional lands to form the comprehensive area you know today as the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, both as an honor to the Chickasaw Nation and to better classify its recreational purposes. It’s still under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service but allows certain freedoms of a recreation area, unlike national parks.

Are You Wondering If It Snows In Oklahoma?

Oklahoma’s winter weather and snowfall can vary from year to year. We’ve spent the majority of every winter in Oklahoma during our lifetime and each winter season is unique.

Winters are usually mild on average with little snowfall. Some winters see very low temperatures and heavier snow amounts, depending on the location, but not for an extended period. Although, we typically don’t see above 30 inches of snow per year on average even in the snowiest part of the state. 

Best place to see snow in Oklahoma? You need to be in the panhandle area, in the northwestern part of the state. 

Does It Snow In Oklahoma?

To put it simply, yes! It snows in Oklahoma, and boy is it a treat when it does. That is if you’re a fan of those white, icy crystals. Snowfall amounts are typically low in comparison to many other areas of our world but do occasionally occur. 

Our family delights in a snow-covered day filled with building forts and snowmen, roaring fires, hot cocoa, and indoor games. 

What month does it start snowing in Oklahoma?

We often see the season’s first snowfall in November or December, whether it’s a dusting or a few inches. Snowfall was recorded in Oklahoma as early as the 2nd week of October back in 1970. 

How often does it snow in Oklahoma?

Residents in northwestern Oklahoma typically see heavy snowfall at least 1 to 2 times a year on average, according to the National Weather Service. WFO Norman conducted a study of 50 years of daily snowfall amounts from 1951 to 2001.

They found that the average number of snowfalls each winter season over that time period was typically between 4 and 5 times. However, some years saw very little. Peak snowfall occurred in January typically. However, March has proven to have several major snowfalls with record totals.

The regions most prone to significant snowfall are the panhandle and counties in the northwest with higher elevation.  

During this period, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Lawton, each typically experienced a snowfall event with accumulations of 4 inches or more once every one to two years. As for more substantial snowfalls of 8 inches or more, Tulsa averaged such an event approximately once every five years, Oklahoma City once every five to ten years, and Lawton once every ten to twenty years.

Although the peak months for these significant snowfalls of 8 inches or more typically align with those for the 4-inch snowfalls, in northeast Oklahoma, the peak for the heavier snow events tends to shift towards March.

Best Places For Snow In Oklahoma

Oklahoma’s panhandle and most northwestern parts of the state usually see the most snowfall. 

Buffalo, OK holds the record for the most snowfall in the state. 36 inches of snow was recorded on February 20, 1971, during one snowy event. In some places, snowdrifts reached heights of up to 20 feet. Interestingly enough, the nearby Boise City area saw only about 3 inches. 

Oklahoma has roughly 68,577 square miles of land and about 1,302 square miles of water. As the 19th largest state in our country with varied elevations, one region may see snowfall while another part of the state sees little to none during any weather occurrence. 

Snowfall Totals In Oklahoma

Check out this meteorologist’s map depicting on average, how much snowfall each area of Oklahoma has received each year over the past couple of decades. The panhandle has received roughly 20 to 30 inches of snow each year on average. The Oklahoma City area has averaged between 6 and 8 inches of snow. Snowfall totals lessen to the south on average.

The Christmas Eve blizzard of 2009 was memorable, with high snow totals across the state for a rare snowy Christmas. In 2021, we experienced heavy snowfall with 6 to 8 inches at our location in the metro area. Just miles away saw far less. Snowfalls can vary in amounts, locations, and intensities from year to year, but we usually see at least a little. 

Oklahomans are resourceful. We are pros at making remarkable snow creations from both wet and dry snow, and with very little snowfall at all. 

Winters In Oklahoma

Oklahoma winters are always unique. Snowfall varies depending on the year. When visiting, pack t-shirts and fleece-lined pants if you plan to stay for a while because temps and weather patterns can change drastically fairly quickly. Fortunately, we have some of the best meteorologists and state-of-the-art technology in the country to keep us up-to-date and prepared.

What is the coldest month in Oklahoma?

January is usually the coldest month in Oklahoma. The coldest January in Oklahoma City and much of Oklahoma on record dates back to January of 1930.

How cold does it get in Oklahoma?

Our record lows were recorded as -27 degrees in 1905 and 1930. Cold does not necessarily mean snowfall, however, and vice versa. Oklahoma can see snow, ice, or rain during winter months. Our driest areas often see the highest snowfall.

Weather In Oklahoma

The weather in Oklahoma likes to keep us on our toes. We may have 2 weeks of temperatures in the teens during winter and then suddenly have a day in the 80s in February. 

There have been weeks where sleet, low temps, rain storms, tornado warnings, and winter warnings have all occurred in the same week. But that’s rare. A 60+ degree change from one day to the next has been known to occur occasionally. 

Oklahoma’s landforms are anything but ordinary. From rolling plains, mesas, and buttes in the west to forests, gorges, and mountain ranges across the state to the east, Oklahoma’s ecoregions are many. The ecological variety in Oklahoma is closely linked to the state’s diverse climate, topography, geological features, types of soil, and the ways in which the land is utilized.

Precipitation overall increases to the east, while rainfall variability increases westward. The combination of these factors causes temperatures to increase to the south.

Does Oklahoma have 4 seasons?

Yes! One of the best things about Oklahoma is its distinct and varied seasons. If you’re a fan of seasonal changes and weather patterns, we just might need to be on your must-visit radar. 

Winter

Winters further south remain mild while northern and northwestern counties are typically mild but colder. Oklahoma’s winter weather can vary greatly across the state. 

Spring

Signs of spring begin in February and March with green grass blades poking through the earth, and blossoming dogwoods. Our state tree, the Eastern Redbud, turns vibrant shades of purple in March and April. Expect a mixture of warm days and cooler days as well. You might see a late snowfall or an early 80-degree day on any given week. 

With some of the most active tornado seasons, our meteorologists are some of the best in the country with the most up-to-date advanced weather technology available.

Summer

Summers are usually hot with occasional 100+ degree days by July and August. Averages are usually mid-80s to lower 90’s. June is often warm.

Fall

Temps are typically cooler in the fall, and some of the native deciduous trees turn vibrant colors of yellow, red, or orange, while many stay brown. Color changes usually occur anytime between mid-October to late November. Rainfall throughout the year and early freezes play heavily into our foliage turnout.

Tired of those hot, warm days? Don’t worry, cooler temps and possibly snow are just around the corner, and vice versa. About the time you’re exhausted from one season or type of weather, a seasonal relief and change is just around the corner.  

How hot does Oklahoma get?

Oklahoma can get fairly hot during the summer months and into early fall. Our hottest temperature recorded was 120 degrees, at 6 different times over the years. Oklahoma City’s record temp is 113 degrees. It is not uncommon to see multiple days above 100 during July or August. The hottest summers usually average in the 80’s with temps in the 80’s and 90’s. August is the hottest month in Oklahoma.

From May to September, it’s not uncommon for temperatures to reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, with some years seeing frequent occurrences according to the Oklahoma Climatological Survey. Such high temperatures are very rare in April and October.

Western Oklahoma typically endures the most intense heat during the summer, with 30 to 40 days registering temperatures of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or above, which is more than any other region in the state.

National Weather Center in Norman, OK

The National Weather Center (NWC) in Norman, Oklahoma, is a hub of meteorological research, operations, and education, jointly operated by the University of Oklahoma and several federal government organizations, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Things To Do In Winter In Oklahoma

Oklahoma’s generally mild winters provide opportunities for people to enjoy both outdoor and indoor activities. Check out some of our favorites.

1. Devon Ice Rink

The Devon Ice Rink in Oklahoma City is open from late November to early February each year. Although not open throughout the winter, it’s available during a large portion of the winter season. It’s nestled within the Myriad Gardens and near the Crystal Bridge. This urban outdoor skate rink is a terrific way to have fun and get some exercise during the cold, winter months. 

2. Pickleball Establishments

We love spending warmer winter days playing pickleball. There are several facilities with indoor and outdoor courts. Some have the added bonus of providing snacks, food, and other indoor and outdoor games as well. A couple of our favorites:

3. Thunder Games

The Oklahoma City Thunder is a professional basketball team based in Oklahoma City, competing in the Western Conference of the NBA. Known for their passionate fan base and dynamic play, the Thunder have become a prominent fixture in the league since their relocation from Seattle in 2008. Watching a game is a great way to spend a cold, winter day! 

4. Museums

What better way to spend a dreary winter day than in an Oklahoma museum! There are incredible museums across the state, featuring art, history, interactive learning, and children’s museums. A few to keep on your radar:

Oklahoma’s parks provide beautiful outdoor spaces for picnicking, hiking, bike riding, walking, and fishing in Oklahoma, to name a few. We’ve visited several on snowy days to enjoy the wonders that nature provides. Parks across the state stay busier on warmer, winter days. 

7. Zoos

The Tulsa Zoo offers a diverse array of exhibits and is home to over 2,000 animals. It provides interactive experiences for visitors of all ages. 

The Oklahoma City Zoo, a haven for over 1,900 animal species, features a range of botanical habitats, animal experiences, and a Children’s Zoo.

Both zoos are celebrated attractions in their respective cities, providing educational fun for all. Mild winter temps allow for great opportunities to plan a trip to an Oklahoma zoo.

With family living near the Lake of the Arbuckles, we are constantly finding new things to do in Sulphur, OK. Why do we love the town so much? Besides its rich history and natural features, some of our children’s fondest memories over the years have taken place here, while exploring with cousins. 

Enveloped in the heart of Oklahoma, Sulphur stands as a hidden gem, teeming with natural beauty and a rich tapestry of cultural heritage that beckons travelers from near and far.

It’s a place where families, friends, and solo explorers can dive into everything from hiking and swimming spots to unique shopping destinations and delectable dining. Truly, the town of Sulphur is a traveler’s oasis in Oklahoma.

Best Things to Do in Sulphur, OK

There is a wide range of activities to keep you entertained in Sulphur. A lot of the activities we recommend reside within the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Here are some of our top spots to visit. 

Note: Most of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area is back open following the tornado damage from April 27, 2024. Check out the park’s most recent updates here.

1. Little Niagara Falls

Little Niagara Falls is a charming and picturesque waterfall located in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. This natural feature is a popular spot for visitors due to its serene beauty and the refreshing swimming hole it creates. The falls cascade over a series of small tiers, tumbling over rocks and forming an inviting, emerald-green pool below.

Despite its name, which might suggest grandeur, Little Niagara Falls is more quaint and intimate. But beware the spring-fed water is quite chilly! 

Pro-Tip: The Chickasaw National Recreation Area was Once known as Platt National Park, the 7th National Park created in the U.S. It merged with the Arbuckle Recreation Area in 1976, formally becoming the Chickasaw National Recreation Area.

2. Travertine Creek

Exploring along Travertine Creek is one of our favorite things to do in Sulphur, OK. The creek is a notable feature of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. It is popular because of its clear and cool streams that flow through a lush landscape.

The creek is fed by natural springs, including Antelope and Buffalo Springs, contributing to its constant flow and providing a refreshing environment for visitors.

Travertine Creek’s name is derived from the presence of travertine, a type of limestone deposited by mineral springs. The creek meanders through the park’s Travertine district, historically known as Platt National Park. It offers a variety of picturesque spots perfect for picnicking, wading, and observing the local wildlife.

The area around the creek is well-maintained with trails like the Travertine Creek Trail. It allows visitors to enjoy a stroll alongside the water, taking in views of small waterfalls and the uniquely clear water. 

Pro-Tip: As you travel down Perimeter Road inside of the park near the Travertine Center, be on the lookout for pullover parking spots. Then hike down the hill to the creek. These are my favorite spots for private swimming in the creek area. Unfortunately, Little Niagara is often crowded and busy during peak times of the year. 

3. Travertine Nature Center

The Travertine Nature Center is the main educational facility of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, located in Sulphur, Oklahoma. It serves as a focal point for visitors and an excellent starting place for exploring the park’s natural and cultural resources. 

Highlights of the Travertine Nature Center include:

• Exhibits: The center houses a variety of exhibits that provide information about the local ecosystem, geology, and history of the area.

• Live Animals: Visitors can see live reptiles, amphibians, and fish, offering an up-close look at some of the species native to the region. We once saw an adorable, one-eyed small owl while visiting.

• Ranger Programs: Park rangers often conduct educational programs, videos, and guided walks, helping visitors to understand and appreciate the park’s natural and historical significance. Kids can become a Junior Ranger and complete a booklet as well!

• Starting Point for Trails: The nature center is a great starting point for several hiking trails that allow exploration of the surrounding landscape, including the Travertine Creek and the many springs that feed it.

The Travertine Nature Center is an important resource for education and conservation. It highlights the unique features of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area and provides visitors with the knowledge to enjoy and respect the park’s diverse environments.

Pro-Tip: The park holds a Historic Candlelight Tour one weekend every October. It’s a self-guided tour with people dressed in costume, teaching about the park’s history as you meander through the park. The experience is a wonderful educational treat for all ages. 

4. Chickasaw Cultural Center

The Chickasaw Cultural Center is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to preserving and sharing the history, culture, and traditions of the Chickasaw Nation. It is one of the largest and most comprehensive tribal cultural centers in the United States. The center offers a rich experience for visitors of all ages.

Key features and attractions of the Chickasaw Cultural Center include:

• Exhibits: The center features numerous exhibits that showcase Chickasaw history, from ancient times to the present day, through interactive multimedia displays, artifacts, and storytelling.

• Chikasha Inchokka’ Traditional Village: An outdoor living history village where visitors can experience the traditional life and surroundings of the Chickasaw people before European contact.

• Holisso: A specialized library and archive focusing on the study and preservation of Chickasaw history and culture.

• Anoli’ Theater: A large-format theater that presents films and live performances, including those about Chickasaw history and culture.

5. Veterans Lake

Veterans Lake, situated in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, is a tranquil lake whose name is meant to honor veterans of American wars. It is a destination that offers a variety of outdoor activities and scenic beauty.

The area features a three-mile trail that’s paved. You can follow a trail to the Chickasaw Cultural Center and enter the area by way of a large bridge, known as the Inkana Bridge.

The lake also provides opportunities for fishing from the shore or a boat. Visitors can use its boat ramp for small boats, kayaks, and canoes. 

6. Hiking

Hiking in Sulphur, Oklahoma, offers a diverse range of trails that cater to outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels, from easy walks to more challenging hikes. The area is particularly known for the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, which provides a scenic backdrop for hikers with its lush forests, mineral and freshwater springs, and varied wildlife.

• Bison Pasture Trail: This moderate trail is a favorite among visitors who wish to catch a glimpse of the bison herd that resides within the park. It offers a mix of prairie and wooded landscapes.

• Buffalo and Antelope Springs Trail: An easy hike that is well-suited for families, this trail leads to beautiful springs and invites hikers to enjoy the serene environment.

• Bromide Hill Trail: A 2.4-mile out-and-back moderate hike that rewards adventurers with panoramic views of the surrounding area and the town of Sulphur.

• Veterans Lake Trail: This almost 3-mile loop trail encircles Veterans Lake and is considered an easy route, which makes it perfect for a leisurely hike with picturesque lake views.

• Travertine Creek Trail: A trail that follows the creek, showcasing the beautiful travertine rock formations and offering chances to spot local wildlife such as deer, birds, or turkey.

Whether looking for a short nature walk or a more substantial hiking experience, Sulphur’s trails deliver a memorable outdoor adventure.

7. Bromide Hill

Bromide Hill in Sulphur, Oklahoma, is a notable landmark within the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. It offers visitors a moderately challenging hike and the opportunity to experience some of the most striking views in the park.

Key features of Bromide Hill include:

• Hiking Trail: The Bromide Hill Trail is a 2.4-mile out-and-back route that is generally considered moderately challenging due to its elevation gain and rugged terrain. 

Pro-Tip: However, you can skip the long portion of the hike and just park at the base of the hill and hike up to the overlook if you want the view without the hike.

• Scenic Overlook: Hikers are rewarded with a panoramic overlook at the top of the hill.

• Geological Interest: The hill gets its name from the mineral springs in the area that were once thought to contain bromide. The region’s unique geology is of interest to both hikers and geologists.

• Wildlife: The area is home to various species of wildlife, and visitors may have the opportunity to observe animals in their natural habitat.

• Historical Significance: Bromide Hill and the surrounding springs have a history of being a health destination due to the mineral-rich waters. This adds a layer of cultural heritage to the hiking experience.

Bromide Hill provides a chance to connect with the history and geology of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. It’s a must-visit destination for hikers and nature lovers visiting Sulphur, Oklahoma.

8. Lake of the Arbuckles

The Lake of the Arbuckles is a prominent feature of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area near Sulphur, Oklahoma. Built by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1966, it has become a popular destination for outdoor recreation.

We take a boat out on the lake at least 2-3 times during warmer months. Our family enjoys swimming, water skiing, and fishing and has camped on the edge of the lake as well. 

The Lake of the Arbuckles offers a haven for outdoor enthusiasts looking to fish, hike, camp, or simply enjoy the peaceful landscape of southern Oklahoma. The lake has 36 miles of shoreline and 2,350 acres of open water.

9. Bison Pasture

The Bison Pasture is a designated observation area where visitors can safely watch the park’s bison herd. Bison Viewpoint is located off Highway 177.

10. Vendome Well & Flower Park

Vendome Well is an artesian well known for its substantial outflow. Flower Park is a beautifully landscaped pedestrian park that surrounds it.

Key features of Vendome Well and Flower Park include:

• Vendome Well: Drilled in 1922, the well was created to provide a reliable water source. It quickly became a popular spot due to its impressive flow rate, which was reported to be around 2,500 gallons per minute. The well taps into the Arbuckle-Simpson aquifer. The mineral waters that feed the well have drawn visitors for their supposed health benefits. Beware that sometimes it smells strongly of sulfur!

• Flower Park: The Flower Park was created in the early 1900s by the Civilian Conservation Corp. Its rustic, natural quality was popular during its era of creation. The goal was to leave as much of the area preserved and naturally aesthetic as possible. The stream that runs between the two areas is lined with stones and wood.

11. Chickasaw Visitor Center

The Chickasaw Visitor Center in downtown Sulphur serves as an information hub. Learn and gather resources about the many attractions and cultural sites of Chickasaw Country.

12. Artesian Spa

The Artesian Spa is a luxury spa located within The Artesian Hotel in Sulphur, Oklahoma. It offers a world-class oasis of relaxation and rejuvenation to guests in the heart of Chickasaw Country.

13. Oka’ Chokmasi

Oka’ Chokmasi is a park located in Sulphur. The park’s name translates to “beautiful water” in the Chickasaw language. It reflects the park’s design and the cultural significance of water to the Chickasaw people.

14. Arbuckle Trail Rides

Arbuckle Trail Rides is an equestrian service offering guided horseback riding experiences through the scenic landscape of the Arbuckle Mountains. This family-owned and operated ranch caters to riders of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced equestrians.

15. Rusty Nail Winery

The Rusty Nail Winery is a boutique winery located in Sulphur, Oklahoma. It is a family-owned business that offers a unique wine experience in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The winery is situated in the heart of Chickasaw Country. It has become a popular destination for both tourists and locals. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings, a small bistro menu, and a gift shop in this historic building.

16. Shopping

Many of the downtown shopping boutiques we frequented were damaged by the tornado in April 2024, but there is shopping still available in the area. We stopped by some of the shops underneath the Artesian and around the corner on our last trip. We hope that businesses that experienced devastating losses will be able to reopen down the road!

These attractions are about 20-30 minutes away from the heart of downtown Sulphur, OK. However, they can easily be on your itinerary while visiting.

18. Bedre Fine Chocolate Factory

The Bedré Fine Chocolate Factory is technically in Davis, near Sulphur. It is a destination for chocolate lovers and those interested in the chocolate-making process. Owned by the Chickasaw Nation, Bedré Chocolates represents a commitment to quality and a celebration of Oklahoma-made products.

19. Turner Falls Park

Turner Falls Park is one of the state’s most famous recreational areas, nestled in the heart of the Arbuckle Mountains. The falls drops 77 feet into the clear, cool water below.

Visitors can swim in some areas, hike trails, picnic, and rent sites to camp in or stay in a cabin. Explore the historic Collings Castle as you hike the area as well.

Turner Falls Park is a family-friendly destination. It offers a variety of outdoor activities and experiences for visitors of all ages. The park provides a serene and enjoyable environment for outdoor recreation and relaxation. 

20. Arbuckle Wilderness

Arbuckle Wilderness is a drive-through wildlife park located in the Arbuckle Mountains area of south-central Oklahoma, near Davis. The park offers a safari-like experience where visitors can observe and interact with exotic animals from their vehicles.

21. Turner Falls Zipline

The Turner Falls Zipline is an adventure attraction located near Turner Falls Park in Davis, Oklahoma. This zipline experience offers visitors a thrilling ride with a spectacular view of the 77-foot Turner Falls.

Broken Bow, Oklahoma Hiking & Beavers Bend Trails Guide

Beavers Bend State Park merges with the community of Hochatown (now an official town) amidst the Ouachita National Forest. All areas have some pretty amazing hiking trails. Many of the rural areas have Broken Bow addresses even though the city of Broken Bow is about 12 miles south of Beavers Bend State Park.

We’ve grouped trail options based on area and type. You can visit several trails in a day, depending on their lengths and your timeline. 

Short on time? Our top 5 recommended hikes are:

• Cedar Bluff Nature Trail – has our favorite lookout point but on a shorter hike
• Tree Trail – easy and family-friendly
• Friends Trail – the most recent addition to the park, plus it’s family-friendly & has a small waterfall along the river
• Skyline Trail– longer hike & excellent for those up for a challenge with beautiful views
• Mountain Fork River Trail – relaxing hike and easy to follow as you hike along the river

Pro Tip: Service can be poor and markings can be difficult to follow so we highly suggest downloading maps beforehand or using an app service that will guide you while offline. This is typical for a lot of the trails in the area. 

Beavers Bend State Park Hiking Trails

1. Cedar Bluff Nature Trail: 

.9 mile / loop / about 30 min. / easy to moderate

Cedar Bluff Trailhead Location

This is a great, short loop that gives you a breathtaking view over the river, as well as the woods. The trail has some inclines and rocky ground. It intersects with Skyline Trail and Deer Crossing Trail is nearby.

It’s a great trail for families with kids who are ready for a little bit of a challenge. You will likely see birds, deer, or squirrels. It’s one of my favorite Broken Bow hiking trails.

It’s a good idea to keep an offline app or map handy, as you can easily go off-path. 

Cedar Bluff Trail Lookout Location

2. Skyline Trail: 

9.5 miles / loop trail / about 4.5-6 hours / difficult

The views on this trail are some of the best. This trail is a challenge with some steep terrain, rocky footing at times, and water crossings. It is not for beginners. Only skilled, prepared hikers should attempt to hike this full loop. 

Look for Thunderbird Falls along the way! It’s easier to spot after a good amount of rainfall. The water crossings could be dangerous depending on water levels, and paths are not always marked well in areas. 

The Skyline Trail provides the same great view as Cedar Bluff of the Mountain Fork River with varied terrain and chances for wildlife sightings. 

At the end of the full loop, you walk on the road back to the original starting point for about a mile and a half. That’s our least fun part. I would plan for it to take about 5-6 hours total with stops and food breaks.

Offline maps are key because paths are difficult to follow in several areas. We usually use AllTrails. I personally love the less paved trails with nature left as intact as possible. It feels more adventurous even though it can be a little frustrating at times.

3. Deer Crossing Trail:  

3.9 miles / out and back / about 2 hours / moderate

The Deer Crossing Trail has some inclines and steep spots. Expect beautiful wooded views and good chances of seeing…you guessed it… DEER! You might come across other wildlife as well. 

Pro Tip: My favorite ridgetop view can be seen from the Cedar Bluff Trail or the Skyline Trail. It’s a point where they intersect and Deer Crossing is close by.

4. Friends Trail Loop: 

About 1.5 miles / loop trail / about 45 min. / moderate

Friends Trail Loop Trailhead Location

The trail begins at Spillway Creek and makes a loop. It has some steep inclines and rocky terrain, but there are some gorgeous views of the river along the trail. You can spot small falls along the river as well.

5. Tree Trail (Forest Heritage Tree Trail): 

1.2 miles long / loop trail / about 30 min. / easy

Begin at Forest Heritage Center Location

The Tree Trail has easy terrain and is great for kids and hikers of all ages. It meanders along Beaver Creek and loops back to the Heritage Center. You can spot white paint on some trees as markers, but it can be difficult to follow. It’s a great family and kid-friendly trail. Be prepared for slippery rocky surfaces and shallow water crossings as pictured below.

6. Lookout Mountain Loop: 

2.2 miles / loop trail / about 1 hour 10 min. / moderate

The Lookout Mountain Loop has some steep climbs and rocky parts that make for uneasy footing at times. Expect creek crossings and uncertainty on the trail path at times. It provides beautiful wooded views of the area. Note that there isn’t one particular “lookout” spot.

7. Lookout Mountain Trail: 

1.5 miles / out & back / about 1 hour / moderate

This trail has the same trailhead as Lookout Mountain Loop, but is out and back instead. It has several rocky patches and inclines and declines and can be difficult to follow. It has pretty forest views amidst the trees but no actual lookout point.

You might spot some deer or unique birds. Expect to come across a creek that is fun to explore. Several mini trails can be explored along the main path. An app to keep you on track is useful. This hike is fantastic for cardio!

8. David Boren Hiking Trail: 

12 miles / mix & match possibilities / out & back / difficult

This conglomeration of trails consists of 7 separate trails and can be combined in various ways, depending on your preferences. Those included and described below are:

• South Park Trail
• Beaver Creek Trail 
• Deer Crossing Trail 
• Cedar Bluff Nature Trail
• Beaver Lodge Trail 
• Skyline Trail 
• Lookout Mountain Trail 

The trail does not loop. Expect spectacular views from ridges, through forests, and over creek beds. It’s a very popular combination of hikes! The trail name honors former Governor David Boren.

Recommended Nature Trails in Beavers Bend

9. Pine Ridge Trail: 

.75 mile / loop trail / about 15 min. / easy

This is a quick, easy trail. There is a small stream and lots of opportunities for seeing native animals and plants. It’s a great short hike for nature enthusiasts of all ages.

10. South Park Trail: 

About 1 mile long / out & back / about 30 min. / easy

The South Park Trail is one of the trails in the David Boren Hiking Trail. The trailhead begins by the Acorn campground at the southern end of the park. It has some hilly spots and stretches to Beaver Creek. It’s a peaceful, pretty trail. You can take it out and back or continue on down Lookout Mountain Trail or Beaver Creek Nature Trail.

11. Beaver Creek Trail: 

1 mile / out & back / about 30 min. / easy

The Beaver Creek Trail is mostly flat and begins near the Nature Center in Beavers Bend State Park. You can also access it off of the Tree Trail.  It follows the creek until it meets up with the South Park Trail.

12. Mountain Fork River Trail:

2.6 miles / out and back / about 50 min. / easy

South of Broken Bow Lake, this trail runs alongside the Mountain Fork River. It’s a pretty leisurely hike with shade and is pretty easy to follow. It has beautiful views of the river with ample opportunity for spotting wildlife. You might see woodpeckers, squirrels, deer, or eagles, to name a few.

Beavers Bend Lodge Hiking Trails

The Beavers Bend Lodge (previously known as Lakeview Lodge) resides on the edge of Broken Bow Lake. The area has a trail with 3 loops available close by for visitors to explore. Other Beavers Bend Park trails are on the other side of the river and are about 20+ minutes away from the lodge.

13. Lakeview Lodge Trail:

3.8 miles / 3-loop trail, about 1 hour & 20 min. / easy

The Lakeview Lodge Trail begins near Beavers Bend Lodge. The trail boasts beautiful views of the lake and is composed of 3 loops varying in length to fit your needs (short, medium, & full length).

It’s conveniently located near the lodge so residents can have quick access to a well-maintained hiking trail nearby. Watch out for occasional rocky patches and some hilly spots. A map app will help you stay on track on the trail.

Ouachita National Forest Hiking Trails

14. North Cedar Creek Waterfall Trail: 

.8 mile / out and back / about 15 min. / easy

This short hike is just north of the Cedar Creek Golf Course area in Beavers Bend State Park. The trail begins as a road. Expect rocky footing in places and possibly lots of mud. It’s best to go when there’s been plenty of rain or you might not see any waterfall flowing.

Follow the signs when you get to the creek to find the easiest way to cross it. It was difficult to find at first, but you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful waterfall at the end if rainfall has been adequate.

15. “Off-Road Hike” to Falls on Carnasaw Creek: 

Difficult

That’s our given name to it anyway.

Tucked amidst the Ouachita National Forest and Southeast of the Carnasaw Lookout Tower, these falls are along Carnasaw Creek, just south of Rock Pile Trail. We parked along the trail road and then hiked on foot through the forest until we found the falls along the creek.

We passed a baby water moccasin, lots of chiggers, steep inclines, rocky areas, and tall grass. However, the experience was more than worth it. We loved the adventure of finding an unmarked gem.

It would be a little more time-consuming since there’s no trail to follow. It’s a go-with-the-flow kind of exploration. Look for large rock boulders and the falls reside within them!

There are so many hidden surprises in the Beavers Bend, Hochatown, & Broken Bow areas, making perfect opportunities for exploration! (As long as it’s on public land.)

Pro Tip: Dogs are usually welcome on hiking trails but must be on a leash.

Are There Waterfalls in Broken Bow?

There are some fantastic falls in the Beavers Bend State Park, Hochatown, and Broken Bow areas. You can see some on the trails mentioned earlier, but we’re listing a noteworthy one below.

Presbyterian Falls

One of the most famous falls in Beavers Bend State Park is Presbyterian Falls on the Mountain Fork River. You can rent kayaks from local companies to experience going over the falls firsthand! 

There is no designated parking place to get to the falls but you can hike to it on your own.

Are There Bears Near Broken Bow?

Yes, black bears are in Southeastern Oklahoma, but we’ve never seen one while there. If you see a bear, keep your distance and follow safety protocol. 

Things to Do While in the Hochatown, Beavers Bend, & Broken Bow Areas

Our top 5 favorite things to do besides hiking, while in the area are:

• Dining: We are foodies. There are lots of great options, but Grateful Head Pizza in Hochatown is a favorite. It’s a local staple and has created quite a name for itself. It serves delicious pizza in a beautiful setting. We prefer their outdoor patio for seating, just because of the ambiance and atmosphere. Waits are to be expected. It’s pretty popular! 

• Kayaking: If the weather and season allow, we love to kayak down the Lower Mountain Fork River. You can take 1-2 hour trips, or half-day trips, depending on your preferences. There are multiple companies to choose from.

• Breweries & Wineries: Several have fun activities like cornhole and one-of-a-kind unique drink options to try.

• Hochatown Rescue Center & Petting Zoo: Its purpose is to care for, rescue, and rehabilitate a variety of animals in need, as well as educate visitors about animal welfare and conservation.

• Shopping: There are so many eclectic and quaint, incredible shops in Hochatown. 

Tips for Hiking in the Beavers Bend, Hochatown, & Broken Bow Area

• Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes.
• Many trails are not marked well so be prepared with a map or an app. The Heritage Center is a wealth of information & has a good selection of maps available. Check them out!
• Pack plenty of water, snacks, bug spray, a first aid kit, and sunscreen.
• Leave no trace! Pick up any trash you bring and leave the area the way you found it.
• Hike in pairs or groups. 
• Take breaks as needed.
• Layers of clothing, depending on the season
• Hat or beanie, whichever is weather-appropriate
• Travel games for picnics & breaks along the way

Hiking in Beavers Bend State Park, Broken Bow, and the surrounding area is easily one of my favorite pastimes while visiting. We never have the same experience twice. There are always new elements to enjoy and take in.

Best Guide for Hiking to the Forty Foot Hole

The kids and I made a trip to explore the famed Forty Foot Hole in the Wichita Mountains recently. Excursions to the Wichitas have always been one of our favorite ways to spend a gorgeous, obligation-free day. It’s doable as a day trip and a short hour-and-a-half drive from the Oklahoma City area.

Wildflowers bloomed long into early summer this season, and I was anxious to hike the area before they disappeared. One early morning near the first of June, we decided to head out to hike and explore before the heat was upon us. 

What is the Forty Foot Hole in the Wichita Mountains?

Forty Foot Hole is essentially a deep body of water within a canyon formed by West Cache Creek in the Wichita Mountains near Cache, OK. It’s a breathtaking piece of landform art, deep in the heart of Oklahoma. The relatively short hike can be accessed via the Kite Trail.

How to Get There

We found that the quickest trail to follow is the Kite Trail, and we prefer using the AllTrails app while following it. The trail is relatively short, but has some difficult areas and is not marked well in some spots. Other unmarked trails shoot off from it, causing some uncertainty.

I always feel confident while using the app. Otherwise, it would be far more difficult to stay on track. It is worth the subscription because cell service is poor in the area, however, the app will still work.

You can download it and use a free 7-day trial for your hike. The hike is described as “easy” on the app, but I would describe it as a little more moderate.

We drove to the Boulder Picnic Area by the Kite Trailhead to begin our hike. (There are some public restrooms along the road that you can stop at just before you reach the picnic area.)

After applying sunscreen and gathering our backpacks, we headed out and hiked about .75 miles to the edge of the canyon overlooking the hole.

You’ll see the creek off to your left as you begin your trek and you’ll see how the area transforms from plains to a rocky canyon. The trail will take you away from the creek for a while as you meander through rocky terrain and native vegetation.

You have to slightly deviate to the east from the Kite trail eventually using a side trail (while paying attention to your AllTrails app location). Some of the small trails that split off from the Kite Trail can lead you to it (there’s not just one right way to go).

You navigate toward the creek as it enters the canyon to find the actual Forty Foot Hole. It’s about a 1.4-mile round-trip hike. 

The Kite Trail continues to wind around further to the Lost Lake Picnic Area. We continued on and found the lake, saw the dam, and then walked back toward the Forty Foot Hole again from the lake.

You can also park at Lost Lake by the dam and begin your trek from there instead. 

There are markers along the path with a bird that looks similar to a kite, but they’re easy to miss and aren’t frequent. As long as you veer toward the creek in the canyon, you’ll find it.

Be sure to watch your step and look out for snakes and unlevel rocks. There are some steep areas.

When the water is high, you can see small falls along the creek. Just remember, swimming is not allowed. 

Once there, we climbed all around the area (while being watchful of snakes) and explored from various vantage points. 

The wildflowers were still in bloom and made the hike all the more wondrous. 

We spent about 2.75 hours total hiking, exploring, meandering, and resting, but it could be done quickly in about 40 minutes. Bring plenty of trail snacks and water. Regardless of the time of year, you’ll need it!

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Forty Foot Hole during any season except for the hottest part of summer. If you decide to venture out in the summer, you have to get out early and finish your hike before around 10 a.m. to noon to beat the heat.

The rocky terrain has little shade and keeps hikers away during hot daytime hours. 

We prefer to visit after plenty of rain. If you’re hiking in the area during a long stint without moisture or rain, you’re unlikely to see as much flowing water or waterfalls along the creek. 

We’re all about those shimmering, trickling streams of water! Just watch out for slick spots.

Can You Swim in the Forty Foot Hole?

No, swimming is not allowed at the Forty Foot Hole. The area is a part of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Learn more about the preserve here.

Where to Eat

We rewarded our efforts with a trip to a Mexican restaurant in Medicine Park afterward. We enjoyed the outdoor patio and its view while eating our chips and queso.

Other Things to Do

Wrap-Up: Forty Foot Hole Adventure

A trip to the Forty Foot Hole is worthwhile and full of adventure. We never take the exact same path along the trail twice. It varies depending on season, rainfall, and weather. Oklahoma likes to keep us on our toes in that department, so always check the forecast in advance. 

Remember that the hole is within the canyon itself. If you go too far along the Kite Trail you’ll miss it. If you start at the Boulder Picnic Area, follow Kite Trail, then meander over to the creek as it enters the canyon. It’s just east of the trail. Keep a map handy and enjoy every step of the way! Yes, literally.
