1. Swim in Bath Lake

Bath Lake is a swimming hole situated along Medicine Creek in the heart of Medicine Park. Formed by a dam along the creek, a beautiful waterfall flows around its edges. Perfect for swimming, floating, and relaxing, visitors and locals enjoy its cool waters for swimming during the summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day and its views year-round.

2. Medicine Creek 

Medicine Creek is a picturesque waterway that runs right through the town of Medicine Park and is a key component of the town’s history, beauty, and ecosystems. The creeks’ banks and walkways are lined with cobblestones, adding to the town’s distinctive charm. Bath Lake is situated along Medicine Creek.

3. Fishing 

Medicine Creek & Lake Lawtonka both provide fantastic fishing experiences. Trout fishing is popular along Medicine Creek during the winter months. Lake Lawtonka is known for its small-mouth and large-mouth bass, crappie, walleye, and catfish. Age-appropriate Oklahoma fishing permits are required while fishing.

The best times to fish are early morning or late evening. These times offer cooler temperatures and better chances of catching fish. Remember to follow local fishing regulations.

• Comanche Shirt Company: Comanche Shirt Company has a variety of unique items, apparel, and jewelry. We spotted the cutest bison coffee mugs on our last visit.

5. Medicine Park Aquarium & Natural Sciences Center

The Medicine Park Aquarium and Natural Sciences Center offers a glimpse into the area’s natural history. You’ll see native fish species and learn about local ecosystems. The center has interactive exhibits that teach you about the area and its wildlife.

You can touch aquatic creatures in the touch tanks. The outdoor botanical garden lets you explore native plants. Kids love feeding turtles and quail and watching the feeding shows!

6. Sweets & Coffee Shops

Bakeries, coffee shops, and souvenir shops line the streets in Medicine Park. A couple of our favorites include:

Mrs. Chadwick’s Bakery: This shop serves crafted coffee, ice cream, and delicious pastries. My kids pick out ice cream every time, while I always enjoy a latte. They take the time to make it just the way I like it and that’s a huge, kind gesture and sign of a great business in my book!

White Buffalo Trading Post: The White Buffalo Trading Post is a jack of all trades! Find old-fashioned sodas, coffees, teas, slush puppies, snacks, and souvenirs in this unique little cobblestone shop.

7. Dining

Medicine Park offers tasty food options that showcase local flavors. You’ll find cozy spots for a quick bite and scenic restaurants perfect for a relaxing meal. Some locations are closed mid-week so be sure to check out their hours during various times of the year in advance.

• Healthy Hippie Cafe & Bar: The Healthy Hippie Cafe & Bar is a must-visit for health-conscious eaters. They serve fresh, nutritious meals in a laid-back setting near the entrance to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Rent one of their cozy Hippie Huts for private dining which can be heated! They also have a glamping village where visitors can rent primitive camping sites or fully furnished tent sites with fantastic views of the surrounding landscape with easy access to hiking trails. 

• Joe Mountain Breakfast Bar: You can start your day at Joe Mountain Breakfast Bar. It’s a great place to fuel up before exploring the town. They offer hearty breakfast options to satisfy your morning cravings.

• Small Mountain Street Tacos: This is a great stop for a quick and yummy bite to eat by the walkway on Medicine Creek. We love stopping for tacos after a morning’s swim in Bath Lake. 

• Old Plantation Restaurant: For a quick lunch, try The Old Plantation Restaurant. This local favorite serves up comfort food that’ll remind you of home-cooked meals.

• Riverside Cafe: Riverside Cafe offers a unique treehouse dining experience. You’ll enjoy delicious food while surrounded by live trees growing in and around the restaurant. The cafe overlooks Medicine Creek, providing stunning views as you eat.

• Tu Familia Mexican Restaurant: If you’re in the mood for Mexican cuisine, try Tu Familia Mexican Restaurant. They serve tasty dishes and sit atop a cliff with an amazing view of Medicine Park below. It’s a perfect spot for lunch or dinner after a day of outdoor activities.

8. Walking 

Medicine Park is quite walkable. Cobblestone-lined pathways meander along Medicine Creek, providing great opportunities for walks along its trails. We park in a public parking lot near Bath Lake and then walk up and down the pathways as well as the streets easily, to shop and explore the town. 

9. Escape Rooms & Pizzeria

Open Wednesday through Sunday, Escape The Park is a pizzeria and escape room combo. It has 4 escape room opportunities, as well as the ability to book online. Stay and eat some pizza while enjoying great views of the surrounding area afterward!

10. Mount Scott Scenic Views

Drive, hike, or bike up Mount Scott for stunning vistas. The paved road to the top is perfect for both driving and cycling. Hours of entrance vary based on heat and time of year. A nice parking lot is found at the top. We love to spend an hour walking around the boulders and exploring the area. Catching a sunrise or sunset from this vantage point is exceptional. However, drivers, bikers, and hikers have certain hours they are allowed to use the road, so be sure to check that out depending on when you plan to visit. 

11. Hiking 

Medicine Park has six Lawtonka Trails perfect for various levels of hiking. Some areas are rocky and slick and may be overgrown or covered with water depending on the time of year and recent rainfall. You’ll find paths winding through beautiful landscapes.

• For a challenge, try the Elk Mountain Trail. It offers breathtaking views of the Wichita Mountains.

• The Charons Garden Wilderness Area has rocky trails leading to hidden waterfalls. Wear sturdy shoes for this adventure.

• A great scenic, short hike to the Forty Foot Hole is well worth your time.

Remember to bring water and snacks on your hikes. The Oklahoma sun can be strong, so wear sunscreen too.

12. Historic Cobblestone Architecture

The historic cobblestone architecture of Medicine Park is a must-see. These unique buildings date back to the early 1900s. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time as you walk past the small round cobblestones adorning shops and homes.

Many of the old buildings now house cute shops and restaurants. You can browse local art, buy handmade crafts, or enjoy a meal in these historic spots. Don’t forget to take photos of the charming cobblestone architecture. 

13. Picnicking

Pack a picnic and enjoy the scenery at one of many peaceful spots along Medicine Creek or in the refuge. Picnic tables can be found along roadways in the refuge and by Bath Lake.

Medicine Park hosts exciting music festivals and art events throughout the year. You can enjoy live performances and browse local artwork.

You’ll love the festivals in Medicine Park. The town puts on several fun events each year. One big one is the Roots Ball in May. It’s a great chance to hear folk and roots music.

Another cool fest is Rock’n the Park in July. You can jam out to rock bands over a fun weekend. In August, there’s the Blues Ball. This event brings in top blues artists. 

The Medicine Park Flute Festival, Art Walk, and Powwow occur in October each year. You’ll find paintings, sculptures, and more.

Medicine Park has a thriving art scene too. As you stroll through town, pop into the small shops. Many local artists display their creations here. You might find the perfect piece to take home.

Each time we visit with our friends, we have our children (carefully) pile onto the town’s beloved iconic chair. We love seeing how our kids have grown over the years, but the chair remains the same!

19. Visit Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is a must-visit spot on the outskirts of Medicine Park. It was established to protect and preserve native wildlife and their habitats.

The refuge is home to a diverse ecosystem, including plants, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians.  Its free-roaming herd of bison, elk, deer, and longhorn cattle are fun to spot while hiking and driving throughout the refuge. 

Visitors to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge can enjoy a wide range of recreational activities, including hiking, birding, and hunting. 

The diverse landscape includes mixed-grass prairie and ancient granite mountains.

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge offers visitors a chance to experience the natural beauty of Oklahoma’s landscape while supporting vital conservation efforts for native species and their habitats.

20. Holy City

The Holy City is located within the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and offers visitors a blend of natural beauty and religious symbolism. It was created as a recreation of ancient Jerusalem and is used as a backdrop for the area’s annual Easter pageant. It was built between 1934 and 1936. Easter 2025 will officially be its 100th Easter pageant!

21. Parallel Forest

The Parallel Forest is a unique and intriguing location within the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. You’ll walk through rows of cedar trees planted exactly 6 feet apart in all directions. The forest is known for its eerie, maze-like appearance. It’s perfectly straight rows of trees create parallel lines that stretch as far as the eye can see. Some believe that the forest is haunted. 

It was planned with intent by the federal government as part of an effort to counteract the effects of the Dust Bowl in the 1930s. The trees were meant to act as a wind block to prevent soil erosion. 

It’s one of the last standing remains of when the area was a national forest. 

22. Lake Lawtonka

Lake Lawtonka is situated on the northern border of Medicine Park. It spans about 2400 acres and is home to many species of fish and wildlife. Boating and other water sports are popular on the lake, as well as a swimming beach that can be used during daytime hours. A marina and gas station are available as well.

Take a kayak to explore the shoreline. It’s a great way to see the area from a new angle. Fishing enthusiasts will love the variety of fish. Bass, catfish, and crappie are common catches.

Don’t forget to pack a cooler with snacks and drinks. You’ll want to spend the whole day here!

23. Burger in Meers

Meers Store and Restaurant is located nearby in Meers, OK. Both iconic and tasty, it’s a quite popular spot for burgers. We stopped by after a day of hiking before heading home. Wait times may be long, but the burgers are worth it! 

It’s a rustic hidden gem of the area. It’s not open every day, so be sure to check out hours before planning a trip. Their Facebook page stays active and often has more up-to-date hours and information than Google. 

24. Museum of the Great Plains

Located in nearby Lawton, the Museum of the Great Plains preserves and showcases the cultural and natural history of the Great Plains region. It features a variety of exhibits, starting from the arrival of the Paleo-Indians known as the Clovis. It uses interactive exhibits and self-directed activities for visitors to use and explore. It’s a valuable educational resource for all visitors. 

25. Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum

The Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum was created in 1935. Its goal is to preserve the history of the Field Artillery and Fort Sill and provide educational opportunities related to its history. It’s one of the largest collections of frontier-era buildings and structures in the United States.

• Primitive camping is located off of Highway 49. Spots are first come first serve only. Permits are available outside of the Medicine Park Town Hall. The cost is 15 dollars per night per site.

Bath Lake in Medicine Park is a popular recreational spot in southwestern Oklahoma. One of our favorite summertime pastimes involves rounding up friends, packing a bag for the day, and heading to Bath Lake for some water-filled relaxation. We typically visit a few times a year. There’s just no better way to spend a hot July day, than taking a dip in its mild waters. 

Built in the early 1900s, Bath Lake is a swimming hole fed by Medicine Creek that offers a refreshing spot for visitors to swim, relax, fish, and enjoy the natural surroundings. Medicine Park itself is a small historic cobblestone community, known for its charming atmosphere and proximity to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

Bath Lake in Medicine Park Overview

Situated along Medicine Creek and surrounded by walking trails, lush greenery, boulders, and a waterfall over the dam, “picturesque” barely begins to define the scene when walking up to Bath Lake.

Although much is man-made and designed, the swimming hole resides in a setting that has retained as much natural aesthetic as possible in this small town. Cobblestone-lined walkways guide you to its entrances, which are spread out and great for most ages.

The dam creates a beautiful waterfall over the edge of the lake as the creek continues to run. It provides a centralized, calm area for swimmers, but also allows the flow of water to keep it from becoming stagnant. Fishing is allowed on the other side of the waterfall during the summer months. Signs posted state clearly where fishing and swimming are allowed. The area is open for trout fishing during the winter months. 

How To Get To Bath Lake in Medicine Park

If traveling from Oklahoma City, Tulsa, or the Dallas area, travel down I-44 until you reach Highway 49 at Exit 45. Head west on Highway 49 until you come to W Lake Dr in Medicine Park. Drive northwest on W Lake Drive until you come to Auto Bridge Rd ( a single car at a time can drive over the bridge ). Turn left onto East Lake Drive to find parking and Bath Lake.

Pro-Tip: There are two main public parking areas along East Lake Drive near Bath Lake. We prefer to park in the one across from the Medicine Park Fire Department in town. It’s closest to Bath Lake and gives us easy access to our gear before and after swimming. Check out our map above for more points of interest!

Bath Lake Medicine Park Swimming

The swimming area is considered the area between the dam and the Curtis Davis Bridge. The southeastern edge is divided by an outline of rocks that create a great shallow area for small children to swim and for adults to relax. Bridges guide you from the walkways on either side of Bath Lake to entrances into its water. Handrails are provided in a couple of spots. Tread carefully, as it is slick in some areas. 

Swim moderators are located on a small shaded deck on the east side of the lake during open hours. Once you pay them your fee (cash only), they’ll give you wristbands that are valid for the entire day’s swim. 

Swimming is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 10am to 8pm. We like to arrive as close to opening as possible, typically on a weekday. This helps to avoid crowds and have the majority of the swimming hole to ourselves for the most part. 

Even in our family full of good swimmers, we like to have noodles and tubes to float on. The edges of the swimming hole have rocks and ledges to stand on, but once you’re out from the edge you’re on your own if you get tired or want to relax, and it’s not clear water. I love to sit on noodles as I relax and watch the kids play. 

Water shoes are also a must for us. Sharp surprises are not fun and the ledges are quite slippery. One of our kids’ favorite water games to play while here is “Marco Polo.” Our kids love it and sometimes others will join in, and they all make fast friends!

Picnic areas & tables are available alongside the edge of Bath Lake.

Pro-Tip: There is NOT a changing area at Bath Lake, but there are public restrooms next to the fire station just down the street. They are not always the best, but they work. If using them, please pick up after yourself and help keep it clean! Porta potties are also available along the street as well. 

Bath Lake Medicine Park Fishing

With a valid Oklahoma fishing license, fishing is allowed in the section of the creek just east of the waterfall.  The Medicine Creek area is stocked with trout during the colder winter months.

While visiting Bath Lake, we like to spend the rest of the day exploring Medicine Park and the surrounding area. There are a variety of restaurants, shopping, and sightseeing available around town.

If you like to hike and the temperature is cool enough, head to the nearby Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge for more adventure. Most hiking during the hot, summer months is closed after 10am if temps are too high. We love to hike to the Forty Foot Hole when it’s not too hot.

Anytime I scout out a new location, I’m on the lookout for the best spots to photograph and the best views of the area. Our top viewpoints are:

• Beavers Bend Brewery – Climb their stairs to the topmost deck for a wonderful view of Hochatown. Sunsets are a favorite!

• Cedar Bluff Trail Lookout – a little further south into Beavers Bend Park, this lookout can be found along Cedar Bluff Trail. Cameras just can’t do it justice! 

• Rugaru Adventures Ziplining Tour – It’s hard to beat taking in breathtaking views during the adrenaline rush of a zipline excursion!

3. Wildlife Viewing

Wildlife native to the area can be found on your back porch or along the trails in Beavers Bend State Park. Bald eagles, deer, turkey, ducks, coyotes, woodpeckers, or even an occasional black bear might be seen. However, we haven’t spotted a black bear yet.

4. Hochatown Rescue Center & Petting Zoo

Hochatown Rescue Center and Petting Zoo are perfect for animal lovers of all ages, featuring a diverse array of animals such as farm animals, birds, reptiles, and even some exotic species. As a licensed wildlife rehabilitation center, the facility emphasizes animal welfare education and welcomes donations to support their cause. 

5. Explore a Gigantic Wooden Maze & Play Mini-Golf

The Maze of Hochatown is a pretty unique experience in itself. Large wooden panels create a human-sized large labyrinth to literally get lost in and navigate your way out. The layout is changed occasionally, so make it a stop every time you’re in town. Additionally, they now have an 18-hole mini-golf course available, Chili Dippers Golf Club, as well!

6. Explore the History of the Area

Check out the Forest Heritage Center & Nature Center at Beavers Bend State Park to learn more about the area’s history and its people. 

Looking for more about the Choctaw Nation and don’t mind a drive? Check out the Choctaw Nation Museum in Tuskahoma, OK. It’s a little over an hour away from Hochatown, OK, but provides visitors with information and displays about Choctaw history. Entry is free!

Gutter Chaos offers family fun with restaurant service too. The establishment offers a limited number of bowling lanes, as well as pool tables, an arcade, and an outdoor patio with games. While it is an ideal destination for family outings, it also features a bar and hosts evening karaoke sessions, for an adult-only crowd.

Hochatown Amusements is another family fun center that’s located a little further south on 259. It offers go-kart races and putt-putt, as well as scrumptious fair-food-style snacks.

It’s very much a quaint, but thriving community amidst the Ouachita National Forest and Kiamichi Mountains, a subrange of the Ouachita Mountains. Despite its busy growth, we still find it to be a unique, secluded getaway worth taking.

The landscape of Hochatown has changed significantly over the last decade. The area’s tourism has exploded, drawing in more tourists and entrepreneurs than ever before. Hochatown has about 300 citizens but sees around 30,000 visitors on any given weekend. The town has succeeded in maintaining its quaint, historic charm while supporting local businesses with its spike in tourism. A healthy balance is critical, and the town itself is proof of success!

What town is at the bottom of Broken Bow Lake?

Hochatown was first established in the 1800s by Choctaw Tribe members who had been relocated from the Trail of Tears. The community’s growth was driven by the thriving timber industry. When timber production slowed, moonshine production became a prominent industry during prohibition.

In the 1960s, the government relocated Old Hochatown to make way for the construction of Broken Bow Lake, resulting in the submersion of the original site beneath the lake and the loss of its zip code. Many of Old Hochatown’s structures, including the church and cemetery, were relocated as a result.

Is Broken Bow and Hochatown the same?

Enveloped in the heart of Oklahoma, Sulphur stands as a hidden gem, teeming with natural beauty and a rich tapestry of cultural heritage that beckons travelers from near and far.

It’s a place where families, friends, and solo explorers can dive into everything from hiking and swimming spots to unique shopping destinations and delectable dining. Truly, the town of Sulphur is a traveler’s oasis in Oklahoma.

Best Things to Do in Sulphur, OK

There is a wide range of activities to keep you entertained in Sulphur. A lot of the activities we recommend reside within the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Here are some of our top spots to visit.

1. Little Niagara Falls

Little Niagara Falls is a charming and picturesque waterfall located in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. This natural feature is a popular spot for visitors due to its serene beauty and the refreshing swimming hole it creates. The falls cascade over a series of small tiers, tumbling over rocks and forming an inviting, emerald-green pool below.

Despite its name, which might suggest grandeur, Little Niagara Falls is more quaint and intimate. But beware the spring-fed water is quite chilly! 

Pro-Tip: The Chickasaw National Recreation Area was Once known as Platt National Park, the 7th National Park created in the U.S. It merged with the Arbuckle Recreation Area in 1976, formally becoming the Chickasaw National Recreation Area.

2. Travertine Creek

Exploring along Travertine Creek is one of our favorite things to do in Sulphur, OK. The creek is a notable feature of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. It is popular because of its clear and cool streams that flow through a lush landscape.

The creek is fed by natural springs, including Antelope and Buffalo Springs, contributing to its constant flow and providing a refreshing environment for visitors.

Travertine Creek’s name is derived from the presence of travertine, a type of limestone deposited by mineral springs. The creek meanders through the park’s Travertine district, historically known as Platt National Park. It offers a variety of picturesque spots perfect for picnicking, wading, and observing the local wildlife.

The area around the creek is well-maintained with trails like the Travertine Creek Trail. It allows visitors to enjoy a stroll alongside the water, taking in views of small waterfalls and the uniquely clear water. 

Pro-Tip: As you travel down Perimeter Road inside of the park near the Travertine Center, be on the lookout for pullover parking spots. Then hike down the hill to the creek. These are my favorite spots for private swimming in the creek area. Unfortunately, Little Niagara is often crowded and busy during peak times of the year. 

3. Travertine Nature Center

The Travertine Nature Center is the main educational facility of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, located in Sulphur, Oklahoma. It serves as a focal point for visitors and an excellent starting place for exploring the park’s natural and cultural resources. 

Highlights of the Travertine Nature Center include:

• Exhibits: The center houses a variety of exhibits that provide information about the local ecosystem, geology, and history of the area.

• Live Animals: Visitors can see live reptiles, amphibians, and fish, offering an up-close look at some of the species native to the region. We once saw an adorable, one-eyed small owl while visiting.

• Ranger Programs: Park rangers often conduct educational programs, videos, and guided walks, helping visitors to understand and appreciate the park’s natural and historical significance. Kids can become a Junior Ranger and complete a booklet as well!

• Starting Point for Trails: The nature center is a great starting point for several hiking trails that allow exploration of the surrounding landscape, including the Travertine Creek and the many springs that feed it.

The Travertine Nature Center is an important resource for education and conservation. It highlights the unique features of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area and provides visitors with the knowledge to enjoy and respect the park’s diverse environments.

Pro-Tip: The park holds a Historic Candlelight Tour one weekend every October. It’s a self-guided tour with people dressed in costume, teaching about the park’s history as you meander through the park. The experience is a wonderful educational treat for all ages.

Veterans Lake, situated in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, is a tranquil lake whose name is meant to honor veterans of American wars. It is a destination that offers a variety of outdoor activities and scenic beauty.

The area features a three-mile trail that’s paved. You can follow a trail to the Chickasaw Cultural Center and enter the area by way of a large bridge, known as the Inkana Bridge.

The lake also provides opportunities for fishing from the shore or a boat. Visitors can use its boat ramp for small boats, kayaks, and canoes. 

6. Hiking

Hiking in Sulphur, Oklahoma, offers a diverse range of trails that cater to outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels, from easy walks to more challenging hikes. 7. Bromide Hill

Bromide Hill in Sulphur, Oklahoma, is a notable landmark within the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. It offers visitors a moderately challenging hike and the opportunity to experience some of the most striking views in the park.

Key features of Bromide Hill include:

• Hiking Trail: The Bromide Hill Trail is a 2.4-mile out-and-back route that is generally considered moderately challenging due to its elevation gain and rugged terrain. 

Pro-Tip: However, you can skip the long portion of the hike and just park at the base of the hill and hike up to the overlook if you want the view without the hike.

• Scenic Overlook: Hikers are rewarded with a panoramic overlook at the top of the hill.

• Geological Interest: The hill gets its name from the mineral springs in the area that were once thought to contain bromide. The region’s unique geology is of interest to both hikers and geologists.

• Wildlife: The area is home to various species of wildlife, and visitors may have the opportunity to observe animals in their natural habitat.

8. Lake of the Arbuckles

The Lake of the Arbuckles is a prominent feature of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area near Sulphur, Oklahoma. Built by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1966, it has become a popular destination for outdoor recreation.

We take a boat out on the lake at least 2-3 times during warmer months. Our family enjoys swimming, water skiing, and fishing and has camped on the edge of the lake as well. 

The Lake of the Arbuckles offers a haven for outdoor enthusiasts looking to fish, hike, camp, or simply enjoy the peaceful landscape of southern Oklahoma. The lake has 36 miles of shoreline and 2,350 acres of open water.

9. Bison Pasture

The Bison Pasture is a designated observation area where visitors can safely watch the park’s bison herd. Bison Viewpoint is located off Highway 177.

10. Vendome Well & Flower Park

Vendome Well is an artesian well known for its substantial outflow. Flower Park is a beautifully landscaped pedestrian park that surrounds it.

Key features of Vendome Well and Flower Park include:

• Vendome Well: Drilled in 1922, the well was created to provide a reliable water source. It quickly became a popular spot due to its impressive flow rate, which was reported to be around 2,500 gallons per minute. The well taps into the Arbuckle-Simpson aquifer. The mineral waters that feed the well have drawn visitors for their supposed health benefits. Beware that sometimes it smells strongly of sulfur!

• Flower Park: The Flower Park was created in the early 1900s by the Civilian Conservation Corp. Its rustic, natural quality was popular during its era of creation. The goal was to leave as much of the area preserved and naturally aesthetic as possible. The stream that runs between the two areas is lined with stones and wood.

The Chickasaw Visitor Center in downtown Sulphur serves as an information hub. Learn and gather resources about the many attractions and cultural sites of Chickasaw Country.

1. Chickasha Festival of Light

Location: Chickasha, OK

We look forward to light shows each year, especially Chickasha’s light festival, which features a dazzling display of over three million lights. Entry and parking are free but donations are welcome. After driving through its scenic route we like to park and walk along its lighted bridge and paths. The experience is truly magical.

There is always plenty to see and do. Check out their food trucks full of snacks, food, and hot cocoa. Camel rides, carriage rides, a Santa Shuttle, a carousel, a Ferris wheel, and an ice skating rink are all open to enjoy. These activities and snack options do come with a fee. If you’re a fan of the movie, “A Christmas Story,” drive by and check out the humongous lighted leg lamp in town!

2. Martinbird Tree Farm

Location: Tuttle, OK

Nothing quite gets me in the mood for the holidays like pulling into our favorite tree farm the day after Thanksgiving. It’s located just off Highway 37 between TriCity and Tuttle. One of the owners is almost always out front wishing everyone well and helping each customer while Christmas music sounds from the farm’s speakers. Martinbird Tree Farm grows hundreds of pine trees, ready for picking, and has additional varieties as well. 

After finding your dream tree, use the provided hand saw to cut it down. The farm’s tractor and trailer, complete with seats of hay bales, will be by momentarily to haul your tree to the front, as well as your family. You can always carry your tree up instead if preferred. While waiting for the workers to shake and wrap your new fragrant home addition, browse the front office’s souvenirs and Christmas trinkets for purchase, while sipping on complimentary cider, cocoa, or coffee. 

Christmas in Oklahoma just doesn’t feel complete without an evergreen centered in our living room window.

Location: Near the baseball fields at Mitch Park in Edmond, OK

Edmond Electric’s Luminance will be a spectacular free walk-through light display. They will have events on designated days such as food trucks and pop-up shops as a part of their Merry Marketplace, and a special event night with Santa, food trucks, and shopping!

6. North Pole City Store

Location: Oklahoma City

Known as the largest Christmas store in Oklahoma, North Pole City brings a magical atmosphere to its shoppers each day. Find decor, artificial trees, lights, nutcrackers, collectibles, and gifts galore. Some days Santa is available for pictures, closer to the holiday. It’s family-owned and operated and has been in business for 30+ years. The new season begins in September. It gives an extra sparkle to each Christmas in Oklahoma.

7. Lyric Theatre’s A Christmas Carol

Location: Paycom Center in OKC & BOK Center in Tulsa

Charles Dickens’ classic tale comes to life in this annual presentation on stage at the Lyric Theatre. The atmosphere, sets, and characters will give you all of the warm Christmas fuzzies. It’s a wonderful event that could easily become a yearly tradition. 

8. Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Locations: Paycom Center in OKC & BOK Center in Tulsa

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra comes to both Oklahoma City and Tulsa, each on a different weekend. The unique rock performance comes from the talent of Paul O’Neil and was formed with the help of talented friends. Each tour of concerts is unlike any other out there!

9. Oklahoma City Tree Lighting Festival

Location: Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City’s annual tree lighting festival will take place by the Bricktown Ballpark to kick off the season. There will be live performances, pictures with Santa, a letter-writing station, and treats and drinks available. Mayor Holt will host the lighting of the tree.

10. Territorial Christmas Celebration in Guthrie

Location: Guthrie, OK

The town of Guthrie celebrates Christmas with a piece of history in mind – Oklahoma’s early days. Local shops open up for the Territorial Christmas Celebration and townspeople dress in historically-themed attire. Find hot cocoa, warm fires, and lots of entertainment and shopping during special events.

11. North Pole Adventure

Location: Sooner Mall in Norman, OK

North Pole Adventure is open in December, up until Christmas, and is moving to Norman this year. It’s a blast for the whole family, with various sections to visit with North Pole-themed activities and decor. I think of it as a large craft show, with various booths or departments to visit up and down the walkway. Kiddos get to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus. They also get to write letters and play in a huge, wintery snow scene. Visiting the reindeer was a highlight, as was sipping on hot cocoa and munching warm chocolate chip cookies. There’s a snack bar with lots of options for purchase. 

12. Nutcracker

Location: Oklahoma City Civic Center & Tulsa Performing Arts Center

Both Ballets’ versions of the Nutcracker should not be missed. They’re magical portrayals of the much-loved holiday performance. We haven’t been able to attend yearly, but it’s always a treat when we do, especially when we make it a family outing.

13. Yukon’s Christmas in the Park

Location: Yukon, OK

People from all over come to see Yukon’s spectacular display of lights, free of charge, but donations are welcome. Over 3 miles with 5 million lights span the park in Yukon. You can drive through and park and walk as well. There is an ice skating rink and train rides available for a small fee. Bundle up and prepare for so much Christmas joy when visiting their displays. It opens the Saturday before Thanksgiving and runs through New Year’s Day. Entry is free, but donations are welcome and appreciated.

14. Downs Family Christmas

Location: Norman, OK

The Downs Family Christmas Light Show is unique each year, with a new set of songs set to over 280,000 lights that are strewn over magical displays. We like to grab a donut and cocoa or coffee from Hurts Donuts in Norman and then sit and watch the show for a while. Entry is free, but 100% of donations go to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. 

15. A Very Merry Pops

Location: Civic Center in Oklahoma City, OK

Ring in the holiday season by attending Oklahoma City’s festive philharmonic concert, A Very Merry Pops. Its holiday-themed music fills the halls with cheer and musical joy. It’s an orchestra performance you don’t want to miss.

16. Classic Christmas Oklahoma City

Location: Remington Park in Oklahoma City

Classic Christmas in Oklahoma City is new for 2024! We are excited to check this out. I will update as soon as we do. Opening November 22 through December 29, it’s promising to be a wonderful and unique experience. Tickets are sold online with a chosen arrival time. Then, you stay as long as you want. Enjoy a Sip ‘N Slide snow tubing hill, light maze, Santa & Mrs. Claus, and Market Square, to name a few. Skating tickets are add-ons. Prices are a little high, but I’m hoping it’s worth it!

17. Devon Ice Rink

Location: Myriad Gardens in OKC

The Devon Ice Rink has been a favorite of ours for years. Our daughter is a competitive skater, so it’s always fun to return to a rink made of real ice and watch her skate amidst the twinkling lights with friends and family. Tasty treats and drinks are available for purchase.

18. Oklahoma City Zoo Safari Lights

Location: Oklahoma City Zoo

Drive through the Oklahoma City Zoo Safari Lights and view animal-themed, lighted displays and sculptures. There are also photo opportunities and treats available!

Location: Automobile Alley in Oklahoma City

Lights On Broadway takes place on some Saturdays in December in Automobile Alley. The local shops and restaurants have their festive windows ready, and visitors will find pop-up activities along the sidewalks with Santa sightings, live music, and more for all to enjoy.

Sulphur’s annual Christmas Parade of Lights features a variety of festive floats. Medicine Park is hosting a wonderful Cobblestone Christmas this year with lots of activities planned throughout December. The Gathering Place in Tulsa is a state-of-the-art children’s park, but transforming it into a holiday setting just takes it to the next level! It becomes a Winter Wonderland during the holiday season with special events, Santa visits, photo opportunities, hands-on activities, and train rides. It’s a wonderful time of year to visit. 

25. Rhema Lights 

Location: Broken Arrow, OK

Gorgeous spreads of LED lights fill the park with mesmerizing scenes and synchronized musical displays. Enjoy Rhema Lights by strolling, driving through, or taking a carriage ride. Festive concessions are available for purchase too.

26. Arvest Winterfest

Location: Tulsa, OK

Located outside of the BOK Center on 3rd Street in Tulsa, Arvest Winterfest’s annual celebration features an outdoor ice skating rink, horse-drawn carriage rides, tasty treats, and music. It’s an urban holiday must-do if you’re in the area.

27. Tulsa Christmas Parade

Location: Tulsa, OK

Since 1926, Tulsa has hosted the annual Tulsa Christmas Parade, drawing hundreds of onlookers. It’s the best kind of way to kick off the season in early December. The parade moves through the historic streets of downtown Tulsa, with varied floats, bands, and groups, celebrating the season. Awards are given as well!

Royal Bavaria in Moore, OK

This German restaurant is located in Moore, OK, and gives us all the warm, nostalgic feeling of Christmas. The food is as scrumptious as it is filling. Their varied menu is authentic and freshly made from scratch. We often get their Holiday Dunkel which is only available this time of year. Not into Dunkel? Purchase a hot cider in a collectible mug instead. (Or maybe just get both, like us!)

This establishment is a wonderful treat year-round. Their outdoor beergarten is the setting for our summer and fall birthdays each year. Whether indoors or out, it’s a magical treat.

Roosevelt’s in Tulsa, OK

Talk about a delight for the eyes… Roosevelt’s in Tulsa goes all out when it comes to Christmas decor. Their ceilings and walls are lined with hundreds of ornaments, lights, and decor and every inch is breathtaking, in our opinion. We went twice the year before last, once at dinner and once at brunch. Be prepared for a lengthy wait!

Katiebug’s Sip & Sweets in OKC

Located in Oklahoma City in Automobile Alley, Katiebug’s is a shop that sells hot cocoa, homemade marshmallows, freshly baked goods, and festive-themed treats galore. It’s quaint and adorable and makes me think of a gingerbread house when walking up its steps. Originally built as a home, it’s been converted into the perfect space for selling sweets and such. Tellers OKC

Located in the First National Bank building in Oklahoma City, Tellers takes their decor up a merry notch for the season. It’s a wood-fired Italian grill with a varied menu. A huge tree stands in the great hall, and many special events take place during the month such as Cookies and Cocoa with Santa and a Christmas Day Feast.

As Oklahomans who have visited the Broken Bow area many times over the years, we’ll highlight 31 top things to do in Broken Bow, OK & the surrounding area, as well as tips for your next Southeastern Oklahoma getaway.

Tucked away amidst the Kiamichi Mountains and the Ouachita National Forest, there are so many epic things to do in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, Hochatown, & Beavers Bend State Park.

Together with Hochatown and Beavers Bend State Park, a gem of Oklahoma has formed. The area’s popularity has sky-rocketed over the years, but don’t worry. It’s still a quaint, yet thriving area.

Note: There is a lot of confusion when it comes to attractions in Broken Bow & Hochatown. Check out this government website, specifying Broken Bow’s city limits, 10 miles south of Hochatown. The Broken Bow zip code is currently used for many rural communities in the area, as shown here.

Let’s jump straight to it. Here are our top 31 things to do in the Broken Bow, Hochatown, and Beavers Bend area when visiting (in no particular order).

Things to Do in Broken Bow & Surrounding Area

1. Kayaking & Canoeing

We can’t visit Broken Bow and not kayak, right?! We tested out a couple of different options east of Broken Bow on U.S. Hwy 70.

Cowboy’s Kayak Rental has some pretty great features about its service. They have FREE hot dogs, popsicles, and lemonade available at the end of your trip down the Mountain Fork River!

We are complete foodies, so this is a match made in heaven in our books. They also have showers and changing rooms available which is another bonus.

If you’re looking for a 3-mile adventure with occasional rapids and a small waterfall dip, check out Yippie Kayo Kayaks. Kids must be at least 42 inches tall and 6 years of age. We’ve traveled with them twice and were impressed both times.

The trip can take anywhere from 2 – 3 hours depending on how many stops you make and how fast you paddle.

We like to pack snacks and lunches in our dry bags. We use a waterproof case to keep our phones, wallets, and keys dry and use a bungee cord to connect it to the kayak. So, if we tip over (worst case) our bags stay safely with the kayak, not floating onward down the river.

Don’t forget your water shoes for these adventures. If you do forget, run by the Wal-Mart in Broken Bow. They usually have them in stock when we’ve unintentionally left them at home in the past.

There are several shallow wading areas and shorelines perfect for picnics along the rocks. If warm enough, you might even feel like a swim! Be prepared though – the water is bitterly cold (in my opinion).

Pro-Tip: Kayaking season typically runs from March through October, depending on water flow and weather. Always call in advance to check current conditions & float service options.

2. Little River National Wildlife Refuge

The Little River National Wildlife Refuge south of Broken Bow is our state’s largest bottomland hardwood forest. It’s a scenic natural area with an observation deck, but the road to it isn’t the best. You need a vehicle that does well on bad roads to get to it.

3. Jefferson Gardner Mansion and Museum

The home and mansion of Jefferson Gardner, “Chief of the Choctaws,” is located east of Broken Bow. He represented both the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes.

Next to the two-story mansion, are the remains of a 2000-year-old Cypress tree, which was used as a landmark for Choctaws traveling the Trails of Tears. The museum and gift shop are both open to visitors.

Tours for the mansion can be booked as well. Check out their seasonal hours beforehand.

4. Broken Bow City Park

The Broken Bow City Park is home to a large fishing pond, hiking trail, playground, pavilions, senior citizen center, and baseball field.

5. Oka Park & Splash Pad

Located next to the Broken Bow City Park, children can spend hot summer days enjoying Broken Bow’s splash pad!

6. Choctaw Casino Broken Bow

We’ve never been, but Choctaw Casino may need to be on your radar if you enjoy playing slots or table games. It has food options as well!

Things to Do in Beavers Bend State Park

Hochatown community

Beavers Bend State Park is in the Hochatown community, 12 miles north of Broken Bow. Many rural areas & communities surrounding Broken Bow have Broken Bow addresses. Many Broken Bow visitors explore Beavers Bend State Park and Hochatown as well.

10. Hiking

The possibilities seem endless when it comes to hiking in Beavers Bend State Park.

Forest Heritage Tree Trail (Tree Trail)

For lighter family trails, we recommend the Tree Trail. Kids of all ages will delight in the woodsy wonders in any season. The trail is only 1.2 miles long with easy terrain.

Cedar Bluff Trail

The Cedar Bluff Trail is a .9 mile loop that is easy to moderate with varied terrain, but a great hike for older kids. It has fantastic views and intersects with the Skyline Trail and is by the Deer Crossing Trail. The views are worth it.

Skyline Trail

The Skyline Trail is perfect for hikers looking for tougher adventures and lengthier distances. The trail extends for 9.5 miles and features a lake, as well as several creeks. If starting with the Cedar Bluff Trail, it connects and can turn into the Skyline Trail.

The Deer Crossing Trail

The Deer Crossing Trail is another great hike and is rated as moderate. The trail is 3.9 miles long with inclines and meadows, and good chances to see woodland creatures. Go a little further to where it meets up with the Cedar Bluff Trail for a great lookout spot of the Mountain Fork River.

We like to pick up paper maps at the Heritage Center and download offline maps as well while hiking in the Beavers Bend area. Service can be poor and trails have unmarked stretches at times.

11. Broken Bow Lake

Broken Bow Lake is the perfect destination for picnics, camping out, or just kicking back in nature. The lake is 12 miles long with 180 miles of shoreline and is perfect for a variety of water activities such as fishing, jet skiing, and boating.

The lake bottom is mostly made up of rock, making it one of Oklahoma’s clearest lakes. Rent boats or jet skis from Beavers Bend Marina.

12. Fishing

Fishing in the area is any angler’s sweet escape, whether you’re at the lake or on the river. You can fish for walleye, largemouth bass, hybrid striped bass, smallmouth bass, white bass, catfish, and crappie. If you love fly fishing and fishing for trout, head to the Lower Mountain Fork River where it’s stocked year-round. 

There are several fishing guides in the area if you’d like some expert assistance. However, we haven’t checked them out ourselves. Check out trout regulations here.

Anyone fishing that is 14 years or older needs to have a valid fishing license. You can get one at the Wal-Mart in Broken Bow or the Beavers Bend State Park office.

13. Swimming

While there is an abundance of opportunities to hop into the lake, a creek, or the Mountain Fork River, there are designated swimming areas in the Beavers Bend State Park.

Beavers Bend Land & Water Park has a swimming area that is open to the public free of charge! Additionally, they rent paddleboats, canoes, paddleboards, and kayaks. They also have mini-golf and concessions available.

The Beach Area is located right off of the Mountain Fork River and Beavers Bend Rd on 17 OK-259A. It’s a great spot to spend the day letting kids swim, picnic, and relax. Canoes, kayaks, and paddle boats are available for rent.

14. Horseback Rides

Beavers Bend Depot and Trail Rides and Riverman Trail Rides are both great options for horseback riding.

Beavers Bend Depot and Trail Rides have horseback trail rides that are about 2.5 miles long and last about 45 minutes. Reservations need to be made ahead of time if possible. They also have a gift shop, concessions, and carousel pony rides as well.

Riverman Trail Rides, west of Hochatown & Broken Bow, have a variety of options! Trail rides need to be reserved and scheduled at least 48 hours in advance. Trail rides can be anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours.

Hour-long wagon rides are also available and are pretty perfect for seeing the views but from the back of a wagon! They also have a fishing package where you can spend the day catching and releasing in their private fishing river.

15. Beavers Bend State Park Nature Center

The park’s Nature Center is located in Beavers Bend Resort Park and hosts activities and programs daily at no charge. Programs might include arts and crafts classes, campfire programs along the river, nature hikes, and nature films.

16. Beaver’s Bend Forest Heritage Center Museum & Gift Shop

The Forest Heritage Center Museum is located in Beavers Bend State Park. It has free admission and is open every day, year-round.

It holds historical documents, antique forestry tools, wood art, a research library, large dioramas, a 100-year-old cabin, and a bronze sculpture, honoring Jim Burnett, the first forest firefighter from Oklahoma to lose his life while fighting forest fire.

17. Cedar Creek Golf Course

18 holes of golfing bliss are located at Cedar Creek Golf Course. The course features a putting green, driving range, pro shop with rentals, and concessions.

Things To Do In Hochatown, OK

Hochatown was once an unincorporated community north of Broken Bow. In November of 2022, residents voted to officially incorporate and become a town after years of work. It runs along U.S. Highway 259 just west of Beavers Bend State Park. Hochatown is home to many businesses and attractions and draws thousands of visitors each weekend. 18. Beavers Bend Wildlife Museum

Beavers Bend Wildlife Museum is located at the entrance to Beavers Bend State Park off U.S. Highway 259. It showcases lifelike exhibits of forest animals native to the area.

19. Beavers Bend Safari Park

Beavers Bend Safari Park features a drive-thru animal park with many species of animals, such as Kudus and Bongos, on a 90-acre plot of land. They also have a couple of cabins that you can rent in the actual park and see the animals up close during your stay!

20. Hochatown Rescue Center and Petting Zoo

Hochatown Rescue Center and Petting Zoo is an animal rescue and petting zoo that kids of all ages (and adults) will enjoy!

They have a large variety of animals, including farm animals, birds, reptiles, and some exotic animals. You might see cuddly kittens or a raccoon!

They are a licensed wildlife rehabilitation center with a focus on animal welfare education, and they do accept donations. Check out their Facebook page for more information.

21. The Maze of Hochatown

The Maze of Hochatown is a 29,000-square-foot wooden maze, perfect for those who like to get lost (but in a fun way). You will have to find your way out and hunt for all of the clues to solve a puzzle at the end. Don’t worry. They have staff prepared to assist you if needed.

Also, they have water and soft drinks available at their gift shop and mini-golf is an option for an extra cost. Expect to spend $16-$20 per ticket and to spend around 2 hours at the establishment.

22. Bowling Alley – Gutter Chaos

Gutter Chaos is a family entertainment center and full-service restaurant. A few lanes for bowling are available, along with pool tables, an arcade, and an outdoor patio and games. It’s a great place to take the whole family but has a bar as well and karaoke in the evenings.

A lot of places close earlier in the evening in the area, but Gutter Chaos is open until 10pm on weeknights, 11pm on the weekends, and is only closed on Tuesdays. It’s an often-missed gem for all ages!

23. Hochatown Amusements

Another great spot for some family fun is Hochatown Amusements. Go-karts, a mini golf course, and fair food are all right there, in the heart of Hochatown. Expect closures during the slower, winter months.

24. Train Rides

Whether you’re looking for a train ride or a horse ride, Beavers Bend Depot & Trail Rides is a great place to get to do both! Train rides last about 20 minutes and go through the neighboring forest and continue throughout the day.

Reservations need to be made for the trail rides, which are about 2.5 miles long and last about 45 minutes. They do have a gift shop, concessions, and carousel pony rides as well.

25. UTV Rentals

There are several options in the area. Bandits ATV have come highly recommended, but we personally haven’t tried them out yet. Check out this guide for Broken Bow UTV trails and maps on the Ouachita National Forest’s website.

Make sure the rental company you choose has good knowledge of local trails and rules and regulations in the area.

26. BigFoot Speedway

BigFoot Speedway is a family-oriented establishment featuring go-karts, snocones, and a ride called the BigFoot 360. It’s ideal for kids of all ages, and adults too!

27. Hochatown Escape Games

Have a super sleuth in your family? Hochatown Escape Games might be the perfect activity for you. Reservations can be made online and rooms are private. It’s great for all ages and abilities. Your group will have 1 hour to hunt for clues, solve puzzles, and escape whichever game room you choose.

They have a Scavenger Hunt available which takes you around the Beavers Bend State Park area!

Bigfoot Axe Throwing is also located at the Hochatown Escape Games as well.

Our family hasn’t checked out this attraction yet, but we plan to on our next visit!

28. Old West Town Mini-Golf

This creative mini-golf experience takes you to the time of the Old West, where you play golf surrounded by an Old West theme, such as a country store, blacksmith shop, and post office. The atmosphere is set to take you back in time! They use authentic antiques from the 1800s and are constantly adding on each year.

29. Rugaru Adventures Ziplining Tour

Experience breathtaking views while zip-lining in Hochatown. You just can’t beat the mountainous background. Staff are certified and trained and prepared to help adventurers of all ages, however the weight restrictions are 70-250 pounds.

There are 6 lines total and it usually takes about 1.5 – 2 hours to complete, from orientation to the end. Check out their site for more information.

30. Beavers Bend Mining Company

This is a super cool experience for young kids. If they love hunting for treasure, they’ll have a great time. Located in Hochatown, your kids can spend time playing and learning as they mine for gems, dig for dinosaur bones, and wax their hands at Beavers Bend Mining Company.

31. Broken Bow Slingshot Rentals

Broken Bow Slingshot Rentals allows drivers that are 25 and older to rent 3-wheeled Slingshots with unlimited miles! It’s an Auto-Cycle vehicle that’s not a car and not a motorcycle, but something sporty and fun to drive!

Where to Eat In Broken Bow, Oklahoma

There are several great dining options in Broken Bow. You can find chains like Sonic and Pizza Hut or something unique to the area as well. If you’re looking for places to eat in Hochatown, check out our post here.

Papa Poblanos Broken Bow – We enjoy eating here after kayaking. It’s on the edge of town. Their queso is tasty, and that’s key for us!

Oaks Steak House & Gifts – delicious variety of food including steak, seafood, & a salad bar in a warm, rustic cabin atmosphere

Donut Crossing – I’m a sucker for yummy donuts & this hit the spot! It’s a great breakfast option.

Where to Stay When Visiting Broken Bow

Cabins

There are so many fantastic options when it comes to cabin rentals! Choosing something in your budget with a good cancellation policy and/or travel insurance is vital, in case the worst should happen and you can’t make it last minute.

What Should I Bring to Broken Bow, OK?

Depending on your accommodation of choice, pack for the weather and the terrain. We typically visit in the spring and fall. A few of our recommended items:

• camera
• light backpacks
• reusable water bottles
• light jacket
• lifejackets (We like to bring our own for the kids.)
• fishing gear
• sunscreen
• water shoes
• external battery for cell phone (you’ll likely be out all day with no place to charge)
• comfortable walking shoes or hiking shoes
• hat / beanie

How to Get to Broken Bow, OK

Travel times will depend on where you’re traveling from. Typical expected travel times from nearby cities include:

From Oklahoma City, OK: 219 miles (a little under 4 hours)

From Tulsa, OK: 198 miles (a little over 3 hours)

From Dallas, TX: 169 miles (about 3 hours)

From Little Rock, AR: 167 miles (about 3 hours)

Note: Hochatown is about a 10-minute drive north of Broken Bow.

When To Go To Broken Bow, Hochatown, & Beavers Bend

The Broken Bow area is a treat year-round, but if you have specific activities in mind, there are prime seasons.

Kayaking: Water sports such as kayaking are best between late April and October. Openings & closures will begin depending on water levels and temperature, so be sure to call in advance if these activities are must-do’s on your list.

Fall foilage: Late October & Early November are best, depending on several factors such as rainfall and seasons of drought. Call the Beavers Bend State Park office in advance to see if they have a current prediction.

Shopping & Dining: These establishments are often open year-round, but check out hours beforehand. Many places close just before and right after the weekend.

Personally, we prefer visiting during spring, early summer, and fall. The weather is typically mild and enjoyable, and most activities are available so options aren’t as limited.

However, many families visit during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons to be able to celebrate the holidays together in fun, festive, woodsy settings.

What is Broken Bow, OK Known For? Some Facts.

• Broken Bow, Hochatown, and Beavers Bend State Park are all in the foothills of the Kiamichi Mountains, surrounded by the Ouachita National Forest. Encircled by a lush, majestic landscape, this area has 14,000 acres for boating, fishing, or shopping. Broken Bow Lake’s 180-mile-long shoreline is perfect for outdoor water activities of all kinds.

• Originally one of Oklahoma’s first seven state parks, Beavers Bend State Park was established in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

• The Chickasaw and Choctaw Trail of Tears wound through the area. Their rich history is preserved through museums in the area as well as the stories of local residents.

• As of 2022, Hochatown is no longer an unincorporated community, but a 11-square-mile strip of town! The combination of Hochatown, Broken Bow, and Beavers Bend State Park combine to create the wonderful retreat that so many enjoy.

• Some places close down during the winter months, so be sure to check in with the spots that pique your interest before booking your trip.
